‘Digitopia’ kicks off Edinburgh fest

THE English multimedia dance play “Digitopia” kicked off the Edinburgh frontier drama exhibition, a month-long cultural festival, at the Theater of Light and Shadow which is inside the shopping center, The Hub.

Two dancers spread the abstract idea of male and female, zero and one, Tom Dale, the director of the dance-drama, told Shanghai Daily.

It was “Digitopia’s” debut performance on the Chinese mainland, as well as for Dale and his troupe.

“It was also the first time that we staged a play in a theater which was in a shopping mall. That was quite new to use,” Dale said, adding that it took more time to set up on facilities and technology.

The English director graduated from Laban, winning the center’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. The director then performed with leading choreographers and companies including Mathew Bourne’s Adventures in Motion Pictures before focusing on creating his own work and starting his own Tom Dale Company.

Dale pursued his artistic vision by bringing together artists to collaborate on bold, exciting, innovative projects that integrate art in motion and have a particular synergy with the digital arts and electronic music.

Until the New Year

In the coming weekends, there will be another three shows, including the French children’s musical “Ploum,” a cheerful parent-child interaction; the Swedish light and shadow play “I Am Somebody,” that combines high-tech and body performance; and the “Peace-War” that mixes painting, music and images together and transfers the hope and expectations that human have for a bright future.

The Hub will also be lit up for the Lumières Shanghai light festival — a collaboration with Lyon Festival of Lights — and display five dazzling lighting installation art works until the New Year.

Visitors can enjoy the light art works including Christophe Martine’s “Luminéoles,” “Swing in Love” by *LLND team formed two French artists living in Shanghai — Laurent Lettree and Nathalie Delpech, “Giant Dandelion” created by Olivia d’Aboville, a French-Filipino artist based in Manila, “Echo Wall,” by local Chinese artist Liu Yi, and multi-media creation “The Moon” by young Chinese artist Feng Jiacheng.

As one of the most popular art piece of Lyon Festival of Lights 2014 and candidate work of Lumières London 2015, “Luminéoles” takes shape in an abstract manner, leaving plenty of room for imagination.

It rises up to the sky in a beautiful ballet of light from which poetic dreams get their energy.

The romantic monumental installation “Swing in Love,” that stretches 18 meters high, combines light, sound and movement and is probably the most enjoyable artwork in this festival.

Participants can swing under the lights of a gigantic illuminated tree, triggered by their movements and synchronized lighting effects and sounds. The interactive setup invites the lovers to become the conductors of a giant multimedia audio-visual show.
