Disney On Ice show includes 50 beloved characters
Local audiences will be treated to Disney On Ice’s latest offering, “Treasure Trove,” next weekend with a lineup of hit songs, memorable scenes and familiar characters.
The 90-minute show will appear seven times at Mercedes-Benz Arena from November 15 to 17.
Encompassing eight movies and more than 50 Disney characters, it is an action-packed ice adventure produced by Feld Entertainment under an agreement with the Walt Disney Company.
“Setting the gold standard with a magical medley of Disney tales spanning the years from the first animated film, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ to the latest films, it will resonate with not only kids, but with their parents as well,” said Cao Huizhi, senior marketing manager from Feld Entertainment.
The show includes moments from classic Disney films like “Peter Pan,” “The Lion King,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid,” as well as newer favorites like “The Princess and the Frog.”
Audiences will have the chance to brave a battle against Captain Hook and his pirate pals with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys; trek across the Pride Lands with Simba, Timon and Pumbaa, and enter the whimsical world of Wonderland to witness a precision skating number by the Queen of Hearts’ army of cards.
The production recently visited Japan, where it drew almost 450,000 and hit 150 million yuan (US$24.6 million) at the box office.
“The show will be a mix of advanced lighting, stage effects and music,” Cao says. “As the show progresses, the lighting takes center stage and transports the audience directly into the heart of each tale. Our lighting designer will use a variety of techniques to set the mood.”
Costumes are very important to the show — they are designed to be unique to each story and allow for movement on the ice.
The production first takes audiences to Wonderland where Alice, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and the White Rabbit are “Painting the Roses Red” for the Queen of Hearts.
The queen beckons forth her army of cards in an amazing illusion constructed by Choreographer Cindy Stuart.
Audiences will then escape to Never Land with Peter Pan and hang out in the Lost Boys’ hideout, complete with a slide.
To keep up with the fast pace of moving through so many of Disney’s stories, production designer James Youmans has created a versatile set that can be quickly modified. “The set consists of several pieces that detach from one another, allowing us to rearrange it and even move pieces, such as the hideout, to the center of the ice,” Youmans says.
The production concludes with a captivating parade of all nine Disney princesses, bringing the production to a final culmination of excitement and adventure, organizers said.
