Drink and dine with a view at Bund lounge

Right across the aisle from the famous M on the Bund restaurant is the newly opened M Glam, a chic dining lounge and bar that serves contemporary fusion style dishes complimented with modern cocktails for an evening out.

Upon entering, guests are already greeted with the theme that sets the restaurants vibe: A peacock specimen. Accordingly, the space inside is decorated in the peacock’s colors — green, teal and blue.

The walls are adorned with a wide range of art, including works by Christopher Doyle, the Australian-Hong Kong cinematographer.

During a recent visit, just a week after Glam’s opening, I was delighted by the restaurant’s concept, food and drinks.

For the cocktail before dinner, I tried the Glam’s Botanical Garden (88 yuan/US$14), a refreshing and mild drink made with London Dry Gin, St Germain Elderflower Liqueur, basil, chamomile & fennel bitters, garnished with cucumber ice cubes.

Ordering the Botanical Garden was a way to play it save, as the menu also allows you to customize your own gin and tonic by selecting the brand of gin, flavors of tonic and another ingredient to make it more special, like pomelo or dill flower ice cubes that will light up the flavors.

A look at the food menu was a pleasant surprise, as most starters cost between 40 and 80 yuan — not too steep, especially considering the Glam’s location at the Bund and the great view you get to enjoy if you manage to grab a table by one of the windows.

For starter, I sampled two vegetarian dishes — the Indian-style veggie pakoras with sweet eggplant pickle (36 yuan) and Chinese-inspired chili salt crusted bean curd and black beans (38 yuan). Both dishes are fried and have crunchy texture and bold flavors.

Other options would have included the smoked salmon and salmon caviar in seaweed (58 yuan), a light salmon tartare served with chips, and the Thai Tah Tah (68 yuan), a French steak tartare mixed with Thai flavors, served with pomelo and pickled green mango shreds as well as some tortilla chips.

The H Zongzi (36 yuan) sparked my curiosity as it’s named after the traditional Chinese rice dish but is actually a lamb dolma with currants, rice and pine nuts stuffed in grape leaves, a classic dish of the Turkish cuisine.

For the hot entrée, I tried the Angus beef with Parisian butter (188 yuan). The steak was already sliced when served, making it a great dish to share.

The duck dome pie (108 yuan) is one of the most popular dishes, essentially a hot pie with a filling of duck and shiitake mushroom seasoned with five spice powder, a fusion dish that combines flavors of Chinese and western cuisines.

The desserts are served in cocktail glasses. One worth to try is the Pavlova in a glass, which is a twist to the M on the Bund’s classic Pavlova dessert.

As the food menu was designed to share, Glam offers a “feed me menu” catering to groups of two people and more. For 295 yuan per person, simply tell the waiter what you like and dislike, and the chef will prepare a list of dishes from appetizer to entrée.
