Elevens offers food and thrills for sports fans

For most people, retirement is a time to relax and forget about work. For local entrepreneur and sports lover Jin Hua though, retired life has brought the start of a new adventure and the realization of a long-held dream.

In May, Jin opened Elevens, a caf茅 and sports bar at the intersection of Changping Road and Jiaozhou Road. According to Jin, the name is a reference to the number of players a soccer team can have on the field at any given time.

鈥淎fter I retired, I started travelling around and meeting with my friends. At first it was fun, but ... after six years I felt quite empty,鈥 said Jin.

According to Jin, opening a caf茅 was something he鈥檇 wanted to do for many years.

鈥淚 found this place on Changping Road. It鈥檚 right in front of the Jing鈥檃n Workers鈥 Stadium. Many go there to play soccer in the evening, so I opened a caf茅 and sports bar for those who live nearby or come to exercise,鈥 he said.

But Jin did more than just stake out a prime location. He also had a hand in designing the interior of Elevens.

鈥淚t鈥檚 typical American style, very rough yet textured,鈥 he said. From the wooden roof beams on the ceiling, Jin hung flags from a number of countries as well as several famous soccer clubs. The throw pillows also bear logos of various notable European soccer teams.

As a sports bar, Elevens is always filled to capacity on important game days. Guests can watch their favorite teams via satellite feed beamed to televisions suspended above the bar. 鈥淲herever you sit, indoor or outdoor, you can always watch the game,鈥 Jin said. 鈥淚 wanted this place to have a theme that鈥檚 different from others.鈥

An outdoor seating area also offers a comfortable alfresco dining experience. For those who want to get a little more active, a billiard table and Wii games are also available in two private dining rooms.

The menu is typical American as well, offering hearty favorites like wings, burgers, pizza and steak.

One of Jin鈥檚 goals was to make Elevens an affordable place for diners.

A 12-inch Hawaiian pizza is available for only 48 yuan (US$ 7.5), while grilled rib-eye served with seasonal veggies is 168 yuan. 鈥淲e use quality ingredients, like steak from Australia, but we want everyone to be able to enjoy good food and have a good time without overspending,鈥 the owner explained.

During lunch on weekdays, Elevens offers both Western and Asian sets priced from 28 to 98 yuan.

A cocktail menu features classics like the cosmopolitan, mint julep and pina colada.

Elevens also serves afternoon tea, with a slice of cake or plate of hot waffles paired with coffee or tea for 48 yuan.

Happy hour is every day from 2 to 8pm, when draft beers are buy-one-get-one-free, and bottled beers are buy-five-get-one-free.

From 6 to 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, Elevens fires up the outdoor barbecue.

So far, Jin鈥檚 recipe for success is paying off, as evidenced by the throngs which pack Elevens on big game days. With this new hot spot attracting sports fans from across the city, reserving space for your party is highly recommended.
