Expat fashion avant-garde talks about style

Cyrielle Leclere is a Parisian fashion designer. After working in Haute Couture for most of her career, including for fashion houses like Givenchy and Giorgio Armani, she created Beau Voir together with art embroider Natacha Pons. Beau Voir combines jewel-like garments with French elegance.

My personal style is about flexibility. In one day, I can spend three hours at our workshop, have a working lunch with a customer, run all over Paris to supplies shops, organize a fitting in the late afternoon, then have dinner in a hip restaurant...Our fittings have to be easily adjustable to any of those situations, simply by changing a detail or an accessory.

The best outfit I’ve ever worn for a special occasion was the perfect mix between masculine and feminine wardrobes: a slim tailored pant from the 80s, a racy cleavage and high heels.

I don’t follow the trends, because I prefer basics and long-lasting values.

I usually shop for original and handmade pieces in multi-brand shops that offer high quality but niche brands.

My favorite fashion brand is Gaspard Yurkievich, with his structured cuts and unusually-built silhouettes in quality fabrics. I also like Tara Jarmon, Dries Van Noten or Martin Margiela.

The designers I most admire belong to the past: Madame Gres and Madame Vionnet had a brand new vision of women and designed extraordinary elegant garments.

The style icon I look up to is Grace Jones who embodies the “femme fatale,” terribly feminine and with an untouchable force.

The last item I’ve added to my wardrobe was a pair of black flat varnished moccasins, that I wear as much with pants than with short dresses.

The fashion item I’m eyeing is a little dress with a 50s look, slim-fitted and highlighting the shoulders.

I collect handmade embroideries from the 17th and 18th centuries (gold work, needle painting technique...)

My grooming staples are lavishly decorated hairbrush with natural hairs that belonged to my grandmother and a Yves Saint Laurent’s mascara.

My signature perfume is a bespoke perfume created especially for me by the “nose” Sophie Labbe, made up of lilly and pepper.

Baptiste Bohu is a French interior and product designer who opened his studio in Shanghai seven years ago and launched his first lifestyle collection in 2014. He started with architectural projects and finally went to interior design specializing in high-end residential and commercial projects.

My personal style is casual chic. My job requires a lot of client meetings and social events, but at the same time I have to spend time on construction sites, so my style has to be adaptable and I need clothes that allow me to move easily. Usually I wear classic and premium things on top: shirt, nice jacket, nice coat, and simple jeans and sneakers. I like to walk a lot so I need comfortable shoes. I like the mix between classy and casual, same for my interiors. I know exactly what I want, so shopping in a store will take 10 minutes. I really like classic clothing with an edge. I absolutely love British style. I think Londoners are the most stylish people on earth.

The best outfit I’ve ever worn for a special occasion was the ‘special clothes’ I consider lucky. Special clothes like a shirt or a jacket that you wear for big occasions because they always brought you luck, either at a date or at a client meeting.

I usually shop in the former French Concession boutiques, I am not a shopping mall fan and I never bought any clothes on the Internet. I really like to see and touch the stuff I buy.

If I have to limit my shopping to one neighborhood in Shanghai, I would choose the former French Concession.

My favorite fashion brand is Dior Homme.

The designers I most admire are Christian Dior because he defined and established “French Style” and Yves Saint Laurent because he broke and revolutionized it.

The style icons I look up to is the whole Beckham family, French actor Nicolas Duvauchelle, British actor Dominique Cooper — and I like the classic ones: Steve McQueen and James Dean. I also love all the styling of the James Bond movies!

My last wardrobe addition is a timeless and must-have black Burberry rain coat for the cold season.

The fashion items I’m eyeing include a very nice watch, a Pierre Balmain jacket, a Givenchy computer bag, a Neil Barret sweater and Paul Smith leather boots, all this mixed with some basics from Zara to control the budget.

The most memorable place I’ve traveled is Bali. Something is really magical in that place.

The best thing about living in Shanghai is to experience the city’s energy, dynamism, opportunities, cosmopolitan vibes, continuous change and evolution, active pace, hope, and dreams. A bit what might have been NYC in the 70s I guess. We are so lucky to experience it.
