Famed confectioner expands to Shanghai

Founded in 1903 by Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer, the patisserie Angelina on Rue de Rivoli in Paris is home to some of the most acclaimed chocolate desserts in the French capital. It was said to be a favorite of Coco Chanel herself, who was often spotted there with its signature Mont-Blanc and a cup of British tea or hot choco.

The patisserie now has two branches in Shanghai serving its signature drinks and pastries.

The most famed item on Angelina’s menu is the old-fashioned hot chocolate known as the chocolat l’africain, a thick, creamy hot beverage that has a pudding-like texture. It’s served in elegant chinaware with fresh whipped cream.

It’s a cup of paradise for chocoholics, sipping the hot chocolate is like having a chocolate bar melt in your mouth.

The price (88 yuan/US$14) is quite high for just a cup of hot chocolate, but it’s nothing like those made with cocoa powder or chocolate syrup. The high-quality melted chocolate is worth every penny, and it’s served at just the right temperature.

For dessert, the best-selling pastry is Mont-Blanc (88 yuan), made with meringue, light whipped cream and chestnut cream vermicelli.

The Mont-Blanc is better enjoyed with tea rather than the hot chocolate, as the bold flavors of both items can be a bit overwhelming.

The Tentation (78 yuan) is a sweet pastry made with passion fruit, raspberry compote and Madagascar vanilla cream. The raspberries give it a tart flavor which contrasts well with the hot chocolate.

To ensure authentic French quality, the two Angelina branches here in Shanghai serve pastries that are flown in directly from Paris. For this reason, sometimes signature items like the Mont-Blanc sell out quite early in the afternoon. There are also macarons, ice creams and sorbets as well as lunch and dinner menus at Angelina.

In general, Angelina is an elegant cafe serving French pastry and beverages with good service and ambience. If you can’t make it to Paris, then taking a sip of hot chocolate here may be the next best thing.
