Feeling good after beating cancer
Hair transplants can boost the confidence and self-image of cancer patients who have lost their hair because of chemotherapy.
Dr Li Yufei from the Special Medical Center of the Second Military Medical University recently treated a female patient with severe hair loss due to radiation and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.
The patient, surnamed Zhang, lost not only hair on front of her head but also her eyebrows and eyelashes.
She has finished her cancer treatment and now she is in a stable condition, but the long-term side effects bother her.
“Although I recovered well from the breast cancer, I have to wear a hat all the time to cover the hair loss,” she said.
“Cancer patients also should have the right to enjoy beauty.”
She came to doctors for help.
“I checked the patient’s condition and decided to conduct a hair transplant,” said Li.
“We will collect hair from the back of her head and plant it in the forehead,” added Li.
“She is expected to regain her previous look within about six months.”
Li said cancer patients can receive a hair transplant after they have finished their treatment and stay in a stable condition.
“A better self-image is also important for cancer rehabilitation and recovery,” he added.
In addition to surgery, some new technologies can also help restore hair growth.
“A helmet with laser therapy to stimulate the growth of hair is available and its effects have been confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration in the US,” Li said.
A person can lose 50 to 100 hairs every day during chemotherapy.
Medication, physical treatment and hair transplants are three effective methods to deal with hair loss.
But it is important to consult medical professionals before taking up any of these options.
