Folan returns to conduct Baroque Choral Pearls concert
CONDUCTOR Tom Folan is back in Shanghai to work with the Shanghai International Choral League (SICL).
The Baroque Choral Pearls concert will be staged on Saturday at Le Huting Hall at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
After the success of Franz Joseph Haydn's "Die Sch?pfung" in October, SICL will feature music by three of the most successful composers of the baroque period - Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel and Antonio Vivaldi.
Folan, a visiting professor at Shanghai Normal University, has once again gathered a big choir, local and international soloists and the Wan Fang Youth Symphony Orchestra from Shanghai Normal University.
The program includes "Nisi Dominus," "Der Herr Denket an Uns" (BWV 196), "Was Gott Tut Das ist Wohlgetan" (BWV 75) and "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben." Another highlight will be Vivaldi's "Gloria."
"Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" and "Was Gott Tut, Das ist Wohlgetan" are two of Bach's most enduring chorales.
The former is perhaps better known for its obbligato string theme than for the chorale melody itself. This gently lilting theme has been heard in a myriad of arrangements and used in television commercials, movies and weddings.
"Was Gott Tut, Das ist Wohlgetan" is similar in its use of a beautiful theme in the violins, but the music is more energetic, robust and angular.
Bass Hernan Castro, soprano Yi Triplett and soprano Anne Harley will be among those performing with Folan.
Castro, a native of Ecudaor, is a singer, musician and conductor with Shanghai Voices.
Harley is a specialist in baroque music and an avid proponent of contemporary and experimental works. She has performed and recorded many of the standard works of Bach, Handel, Rameau and Charpentier.
She has often performed with Folan, who is recognized for his Bach interpretations and recordings, particularly the composer's large scale choral works.

Venue: Le Huting Concert Hall of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, 20 Fenyang Rd
