French midsummer festival launches

WORLDWIDE French music festival, La F锚te de la Musique, gets underway in Shanghai with a launch party at New Heights on the Bund tonight.

Founded in Paris 30 years ago, the fete celebrates midsummer with free performances by both amateur and professional musicians.

First held in Shanghai in 2010, the festival is returning to the city for the third time.

Two of the caveats to being sanctioned by the official La F锚te de la Musique are that all concerts must be free to the public and all performers must donate their time for free.

The main events will take place over the weekend with music from dozens of performers in more than 20 venues across the city.

Tonight DJ Anima, a live band playing four sets and a small and dynamic jam session, led by John NGuidjol from Sundays at Sugar Maison Pourcel, will get the solstice celebrations started.

The slogan "Faites de la musique" - make music - is a homophone of Fete de la Musique, and the event's aim is to promote this goal, says Mattia Oltrona Visconti from MVP Shanghai, the co-organizer, of tonight's event, which is also supported by the French consulate in Shanghai.

Today, La F锚te de la Musique is celebrated in over 110 countries. For this special occasion in Shanghai, many surprises are expected, according to Visconti.

And in the event of plum season downpours, New Heights has a big indoor area, Visconti adds.

For the La F锚te de la Musique itself, a diverse line-up includes multi-instrumentalist Sim茅o, female rock band The Plastiscines, electro rock duo Silvouplay, soprano singer Elsa Levy, jazz singer Anne Evenou, Caribbean and reggae quartet Noukilla, plus local acts such as Acid Pony Club, Stegosaurus, Pairs and Crystal Butterfly.

And to close La F锚te de la Musique, a huge jam session will take place at Mao Livehouse on Sunday evening, featuring more than 12 bands and four DJs.
