Good old meat pies to make any Brit feel at home
SANDWICHED between Xingfu Road and Panyu Road is Pie Society, a tiny establishment that can best be described as the “Santa’s Workshop” of meat pies, turning out batch after batch of hand-crafted British delights.
The quaint, casual atmosphere makes Pie Society a perfect location to have a beer, a pie, and some mash with friends. There’s room for around eight guests with some additional seating on the walkway in front of the shop. The counter is partially taken up by a large deli case, which contains that day’s selection of desserts from the British Kitchen, soft drinks, and alcoholic options, including British Cider and Brewdog Beer.
As for Pie Society’s menu selection, it is wide and varied, with all pies made from fresh produce, high-quality meat and free-range eggs. Classics like the Kate & Sydney, which features ale-braised steak and kidney filling, are featured as well as new flavors like the Premiership, a pie stuffed with Balti Chicken curry, spinach, and tomato filling. Despite the misnomer of “meat pies,” Pie Society is all-inclusive in terms of accommodating vegetarians, who can choose between the Shepherd-less (carrot, mushroom, asparagus, lentil, and chia) and the Cheesy Onion (English Somerset cheddar, onion, and potato). There’s a meal deal option, with a side of mash (regular or sweet potato), minty mushy peas, beans, or steamed veggies, plus a healthy ladle-full of either beef or onion gravy, liquor (parsley sauce), or one of two chutneys made by Amelia’s. You can also update any side in the combo option for one of Pie Society’s “super sides”: cheesy mustard mash, Irish Colcannon, two different salad options, or french fries with gravy or curry sauce. In addition to their signature pies, Pie Society offers other standard English fare like sausages. If that isn’t enough variety, Pie Society serves a “muffinwich”, a choice of sausage or bacon, eggs, and rocket, all topped with either sweet onion chutney or cheddar served until 5pm daily.
In addition to their permanent location, Pie Society offers a delivery service for within 1-2 kilometers of their establishment. More often than not, however, you can find their delicious British morsels at whatever local activity is happening that weekend — Pie Society is very community oriented, and makes an effort to involve itself in the local social scene. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, Pie Society sets up shop at Jiashan Market on Shaanxi Road S.; in addition, they routinely pair up with other Shanghai bars and eateries like Daga Cafe or Arcade.
In terms of English cuisine, Pie Society’s food is a delightful homage to its British origins, and is delicious by any standard.
