Hearing loss linked with Alzheimer’s

the loss of an elderly person’s hearing is closely related with the development of Alzheimer’s disease, international researchers have found recently. And early screening, detection and intervention to improve the health, quality of life and burden on society has been recommended.

Hearing loss has been enlisted as the third biggest disease found in the elderly after arthritis and hypertension.

There are over 200 million people who suffer from hearing defects and over 45 percent of them are over 60 years old. For Chinese people over 70 years old, it is at 83 percent.

“Hearing loss can impose a serious impact on an old person’s quality of life, including social communication, ability for self-care, balance and functional ability,” said Dr Duan Jirong from Punan Hospital’s hearing clinic. “Old people are more likely to develop depression and other negative motions if they suffer from hearing loss. International researchers found that hearing loss is closely related with Alzheimer’s disease. Hearing loss also increases old people’s risk of death.”

Diabetes is also linked with hearing loss and deafness. Other problems like rheumatic arthritis and high levels of high-density lipoprotein, uric acid and total bilirubin also can increase the risk of senile deafness, doctors said.

“Many diseases need long-term medication and more and more medicines are found to influence hearing,” Duan said. “It is important to carry out hearing screening among the adults for early identification and proper treatment to prevent the development of diseases and problems.”

Hearing screening for early intervention and treatment is an effective measure to prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease and self-caring ability among other things. Screening for hearing loss has been carried out in the Pudong New Area and will be promoted citywide in the future.
