Include high-energy food in diet to reinforce yang in wintertime

For many Chinese, winter is the season for reinforcing the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, people need to reinforce and store yang (“hot”) energy to get through the cold winter, just like animals store fat to protect themselves from cold.

Chinese tradition calls for adding some appropriate food to your winter fare to help boost energy as well as combat cold weather.

Shanghai Daily picks some reinforcing food selected from City Shop.

1.Yi Shiang Sesame Cereal

Origin: Taiwan

Price: 37 yuan (US$6.05)/175g

Description: Sesame can reinforce the kidneys and nourish the blood according to TCM, and it’s very common in the Chinese diet in winter.

The tiny seeds are loaded with vitamins, proteins and nutrients including fat, vitamins A and E, calcium and iron. This sesame cereal is sweet and rich in flavor and makes a great dessert.  

2.YKT Black Sesame Jam

Origin: Taiwan

Price: 75.4 yuan (US$12.30)/260g

Description: The sesame jam is made of sesame that you can eat directly or drizzle with honey to enhance the flavor. It can be also mixed with milk, soy milk or yoghurt. The jam also can be used in cooking, such as in the dough of rice and noodles.

3.Bright 100g Red Date Yoghurt

Origin: Shanghai

Price: 15.5 yuan (US$2.50)/100g*8

Chinese red date, or jujubes, can reinforce the blood and promote qi (energy flow), which is especially conducive to help the liver and also has anti-cancer functions. For women, as the Chinese saying suggests, three jujubes a day keeps the doctor away. Red date yoghurt is natural and tasty.

4.Walnut and Date Bar

Origin: Taiwan

Price: 111 yuan (US$18.10)/400g

Description: Walnut in TCM is good for the kidneys and intestinal functions; it also will promote yang energy. The walnut date thin bar is a Chinese traditional dessert. The delicious bar is nutty and dense in flavor but not overly sweet.

5.October Red Crisp Jujube

Origin: Hebei Province

Price: 17.8 yuan (US$2.91)/118g

The dried, dark red jujubes are of high quality with thin skins and sweet pulp, leaving a lasting and agreeable aftertaste. Dried fruit has a high sugar content that those with blood sugar problems should avoid.

6.Xinjiang Walnut

Origin: Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Price: 78 yuan (US$12.70)/kg

Hetian in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is one of the main production areas for walnuts. This Xinjiang Walnut from Hetian is smooth and plump with a pure flavor. The crunchy and rich taste makes the walnut a great snack. Also, it can be chopped for use in muffins or bread.
