Innovative myopic correction cases rise
Local hospitals announced they are receiving an increasing number of students requiring the use of orthokeratology, a procedure that reduces problems such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Orthokeratology is a creation of gas permeable contact lenses that temporarily reshapes the cornea. It can be used as an alternative to eyeglasses. After wearing orthokeratology at night, people don’t need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses during the day.
“Orthokeratology is a non-surgery method for myopic correction, which can control or postpone the development and deterioration of children’s myopia. But the effects shouldn’t be exaggerated,” said Dr Lian Jingcai, president of Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital. “It is a medical appliance. There is strict requirement for orthokeratology use and patients should also receive regular checkups.
“Only licensed hospitals can provide the treatment. There are some unlicensed companies offering such service, which can impose injury to the eyes.”
The State Food and Drug Administration issued a notice after some cases of adverse reaction were reported to enhance the administration of orthokeratology. The notice said effects of orthokeratology were temporary, and reversible and required a scientific use and stringent requirement for disinfection and regular checkups. Lens fitting of orthokeratology is not a commercial or short-term activity but a professional service having a strict requirement for the qualification of the facility, staff and the equipment.
“In addition to going to a professional facility for check, optometry and trial, orthokeratology needs proper use every time and strict disinfection. Parents must monitor the whole process to ensure safety and effects,” Lian said. “When the child has fever, cold and diarrhea, orthokeratology shouldn’t be used.”
Experts said the key to prevent and control children’s myopia is to reduce long-term academic study and use of electronic devices like smartphone, computer and iPad. “Fatigue of eyes is the reason for myopia. A proper and scientific schedule of academic study and entertainment and at least one-hour outdoor exercises are important for myopia control and prevention.”
