Jiang nails Asian tapas, wine room concept

IF you’re searching for an intimate spot with superb tapas and a good wine list near Wukang, Hunan and Xingguo roads, look no further than Jiang.

Jiang is a new concept from Betty Ng, the creative mind behind Ginger by the Park. “We have a lovely three-level house overlooking the public garden and I would like to use the most out of it to create different experiences to my customers. The first-level space had been re-created for wine and Asian tapas every evening from 5pm. And in the spaces above, we still retain the a-la-carte menu,” Ng said.

Ginger by the Park offers some of the best Asian food in the city and Jiang continues to celebrate contemporary approaches to Asian recipes inspired by the continent’s herbs and spices. Ng has created several small bites featuring balanced, flavorsome, locally sourced ingredients.

The candle-lit wine room provides a casual, relaxed ambience that will stimulate your palate and visually engage you in an exhibition of bold Basmat artworks, sleek wall mirrors above the bar, and exotic flourishes Ng found during her world travels.

The Asian small bites Ng has created are all creative, rich in flavor and perfect for wine pairing.

It’s recommended to begin with the coriander leaf and tomato avocado dip served with papadum, the perfect dish for starting an evening with a glass of sparkling wine. Until the end of November, Jiang is partnering with Root Cellar Natural Wines on promotional offerings.

Slow cooked octopus with Asian herb oil is a perfect marriage between the Mediterranean sea staple spiced up by an exotic Asian touch. The fragrant Asian herb oil brings out the original taste of the octopus.

Hailing from Singapore, Ng is a big fan of Sichuan cuisine and its spices. She has brought green pepper chicken bites, Sichuan chorizo, and Sichuan chili and sesame beef bites to the tapas menu. The green pepper chicken bites feature a fragrant pepper flavor that leaves a mild tingly numbness lingering on the tongue. Two types of pizza bites — Laksa pesto with edamame and basil leaf and Malay chicken curry — are also must-orders.

The house sommelier can suggest the perfect glass of wine for different tapas choices. Each glass is reasonably priced at 58 yuan (US$8.47). Guests can also get 100 yuan off any bottle order until the end of the month.
