Jing’an eatery a ‘temple of ribs, chamber of beer’

The Changping Road stretch between Shaanxi Road N. and Jiangning Road in northern Jing’an District has long been a sleepy street dotted with small, shabby-looking eateries.

But recently, the street became home to a cool dining spot that, as a sign outside promises, “Temple of Ribs, Chamber of Beer, Fries of Surprise.” The casual eatery/bar is designed for a young crowd who favors street culture and a laid-back vibe to socialize.

An open kitchen that faces the street leads to a minimally furnished interior with original architectural features. Tables for big or small groups are arranged rather randomly. Limited edition skateboards decorate the wall as well as street style clothing and hats.

The three partners behind Dope Shifu are long-time buddies. Danny Xue used to DJ around town from Mint on Tongren Road to Bar Rouge. Kone Wong has been working in event management on World Extreme Games (X Games Asia) and House of Vans. Native Singaporean Xander Ang used to run the kitchen at Dr Beer and Dr Wine and was also regarded as the first person to introduce the Hainanese chicken rice shop to the city.

However, at Dope Shifu, Ang wanted to focus the menu around casual, tasteful Western dishes — something they would love to eat in a place where the buddies would hang out and chill.

Barbeque Pork Ribs (68 yuan) come with roasted vegetables cooked to perfection and basted in a delicious sauce. Baked Dory (62 yuan) is the alternative main for those who crave tender and flaky textures. The Dijon mustard and herbs give the fish a great taste, although I found it a little too salty.

There is a variety of sides on offer: Chili cheese fries, roasted corn, fried calamari, fish fingers — definitely not a place for vegans, vegetarians or anybody who cares about a healthy diet.

All the above comfort food are meant to be enjoyed with a bottle of beer. The 330ml draft beer goes for 20 to 40 yuan and the fridge stocked with craft beer from Belgium, the USA and Thailand.

“We are just taking our time to complete the food menu,” said Ang. “When the warm season starts, Dope Shifu will be an even cooler place to hang out as we have a long outdoor bar counter.”

Wong, as the partner who has a wide connection with sports brands and projects, said he would like to bring more interesting events and products into Dope Shifu.

“We don’t like to have a too serious plan for this space. Whatever fun or crazy ideas we have later on, we will make it happen,” Wong said.
