Jujubes great for snacks but mind the calories

RED jujubes (hong zao 红枣), also known as Chinese dates or red dates, are a popular sweet snack around Asia and considered to have therapeutic benefits in traditional Chinese medicine.

There are more than 400 varieties of jujubes, all growing on trees, not date palms. In China different jujube fruits processed in different ways are said to produce different beneficial effects.

They are often used in cooking.

But beware, though they are high in vitamin C and nutrients, they are also loaded with calories.

In TCM, jujubes are said to reinforce the blood and promote qi (energy flow); it helps strengthen the liver and some people believe that eaten regularly it may help protect against cancer.

It is a yang ("hot" energy) herb that also is good for digestion and the spleen. It's said to be good for women's complexion.

"Three jujubes a day keeps the doctor away," or so it is said.

Jujubes are used in cooking in Chinese food therapy. They are also made into rich desserts, such as scones and cakes and soups.

Heyu Shandong Dazao

Description: Da zao, literally meaning big jujube, is the most commonly used jujube in TCM and contains more vitamin C per unit than apples. These dates are quite sweet but because of their high sugar content, people with blood sugar problems should avoid them.

Description: This is processed and baked; the nutrition is not lost but concentrated in bright purple body. It has a delicate taste and fragrance.

Description: The dried dark red fruit is large and oval-shaped. The pulp is soft and sweet with a long, agreeable aftertaste.

Origin: Shanxi Province

Price: 126 yuan (US$20.21)/450g

Description: The fruit is renowned for its flavor, substantial flesh and thin skin.

Ludi Hetian Royal Date

Origin: Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Price: 88 yuan (US$14.11)/450G

Description: The fruit comes from the famous Hetian area in Xinjiang. They are large with rich taste, thin skin, small pits and rich taste.

Jingcheng Jujube

金城丝宝宝摊枣

Origin: Shanxi Province

Price: 16.30 yuan (US$2.61)/738G

Description: These dates grow deep in sand 50-1,500 meters underneath in a fresh and clean environment that is away from the somewhat polluted Yellow River. They are known as tan zao, meaning beach jujube. They are sweet and rich.
