Jujubes great for snacks but mind the calories
RED jujubes (hong zao 红枣), also known as Chinese dates or red dates, are a popular sweet snack around Asia and considered to have therapeutic benefits in traditional Chinese medicine.
There are more than 400 varieties of jujubes, all growing on trees, not date palms. In China different jujube fruits processed in different ways are said to produce different beneficial effects.
They are often used in cooking.
But beware, though they are high in vitamin C and nutrients, they are also loaded with calories.
In TCM, jujubes are said to reinforce the blood and promote qi (energy flow); it helps strengthen the liver and some people believe that eaten regularly it may help protect against cancer.
It is a yang ("hot" energy) herb that also is good for digestion and the spleen. It's said to be good for women's complexion.
"Three jujubes a day keeps the doctor away," or so it is said.
Jujubes are used in cooking in Chinese food therapy. They are also made into rich desserts, such as scones and cakes and soups.
