‘Kissmas tree’ helps illuminate the season

AS the end of the year approaches, it’s hard to miss the strong festive ambience as Christmas trees and decorations go up all over the city. Designers show their imagination to add colorful displays and attract eyes.

An installation of reindeer strutting over a snow-crusted landscape appears in front the Ciros Plaza on Nanjing Road W., while Citic Pacific Plaza wraps itself up as a holiday treat by transforming its front door pillars into huge gift boxes with ribbons.

What is billed as the world’s first interactive Christmas tree that invites lovers to have a sweet kiss has come to Shanghai Xintiandi shopping mall again after its debut in China last year. The 50-foot tree gives visitors the opportunity to ignite a cascade of 50,000 LED lights simply by kissing a loved one while holding a bunch of magnolia mistletoe. Designed by Paul Cocksedge, the romantic “Kissmas tree” gives Shanghai shoppers a little bit of extra magic to get them into the Christmas spirit.

Among the long queue of lovers waiting recently to get onto the “kiss stage” and activate the lighting sequence were Simon Xue and his seven-month pregnant wife, Monica Fu. They returned to kiss each other again under the tree to celebrate the 1,000-day anniversary of their first date.

It marked the second time the couple illuminated Xintiandi by kissing under the lucky tree, as they did the same thing last year on their honeymoon. This time was a little different for the couple.

“We came back to have one more remarkable kiss under the romantic tree with a new family member — the 7-month-old baby growing in my wife’s belly!” Xue said.

As parents-to-be, Xue and Fu have always been a loving couple, ever since they fell in love at first sight.

“I love every tiny detail about her — the color of her eyes, her chubby cheeks, the funny way she speaks, the cute hat she wears today,” Xue said while looking into Fu’s eyes.

Shy Fu also confesses that she finds it difficult to bear even a day without Xue.

The “Kissmas tree” has witnessed their sweet love story and blessed the couple with happiness ever after.

Cocksedge, the designer of the “Kissmas tree,” noted that other high-tech installations sometimes lack any kind of connection with those viewing them. He loves how his “Kissmas tree” installation allows peoples’ touch to bring the technology to life.
