Medical union leading cancer fight

A MEDICAL union led by Shanghai Cancer Center is leading the fight against cancer.
Shanghai has established many medical unions over the years but this is the first one that provides the city treatment targeting cancer.
The union, established in 2016, comprises 11 hospitals from the city’s five districts of Xuhui, Changning, Jinshan, Minhang and Baoshan, three hospitals in Jiangsu Province and one in Zhejiang Province.
Since the alliance was formed, over 600 patients have been transferred to Shanghai Cancer Center from grassroots hospitals for treatment, while another 5,000 patients were moved from the center to lower-level hospitals after surgery for rehabilitation.
All hospitals in the union follow the same clinical practice and medical guidelines and encourage patients to receive cancer treatment in hospitals near their homes, although long-distance consultation, quick patient transfer and sharing of medical resources are available.
“We also offer training to medical staff to improve their capabilities,” said Dr Wu Jiong, vice president of Shanghai Cancer Center.
“Only those who have recieved training, passed an examination and got a license have the rights for patient transfer within the medical union.”
An Internet-based, long-distance analysis and consultation platform was established to offer “cloud diagnosis.”
Grassroots hospitals can upgrade patients’ medical information and imaging so specialists at the Shanghai Cancer Center can give an accurate diagnosis.
Apart from diagnosis and treatment, cancer screening and prevention is very important.
And the Shanghai Cancer Center is the only hospital committed to cancer prevention and early cancer screening in the city.
A chronic disease control and management system was also set up inside the medical union.
Since 2015, Shanghai Cancer Center has teamed up with Wujing Hospital and Minhang District and Qibao community in Minhang to carry out cancer screening. And around 600 cases were found, from nearly 10,000 people, who were at high risk of lung cancer.
All cases have since received consultation and checks. Those confirmed as having lung cancer received treatment.
Two rounds of colorectal cancer screening, in Qibao community, found nearly 3,000 suspected cases from 14,000 residents.
Further checks confirmed 300 colorectal cancer patients, who were all treated before it was too late.
