New GM at Hyatt Regency Suzhou
DECIDING whether to relocate for a job is no easy choice for most people. But for a seasoned hotelier, it’s just another part of the job. In fact, for Anthony Ha, Area Vice President and General Manager of Hyatt Regency Suzhou, the opportunity to live and work in exciting new locales is one of the most attractive aspects of the profession.
“When I was young, I travelled a lot with my family and that gave me great exposure to the world,” said Ha, who took up his current position in Suzhou in August, after four years at Hyatt Regency Qingdao.
“After more than 25 years in the industry, I’m glad to say that I’ve traveled to so many places and met a lot of wonderful people.”
Ha immigrated to the US from Vietnam with his parents at the age of 14. At an early age, he knew he wanted to travel and meet people from different cultures and backgrounds. Such leanings led him to study hospitality at Washington State University. After graduation, his career in the hotel industry started in 1986 at Hyatt Regency San Francisco, followed by an assignment at Hyatt Regency Macau. Ha later went on to work for other hotel groups and also ran his own hotel business with friends. He eventually returned to Hyatt in 2011.
Having spent more than a third of his career with Hyatt, Ha has an intimate understanding of the brand.
“Hyatt is a lifestyle company. To us and to our guests, the hotel is never just a hotel,” said the GM. “We are not just offering a meal or a bed. What we bring to our guests is a complete experience.”
For Ha, Hyatt Regency Suzhou is a prime example of this concept. Located near the picturesque Jinji Lake, the Suzhou Culture and Arts Center, the Suzhou International Expo Center and Ferris Wheel Park, the hotel serves as a social and cultural hub for the Suzhou Industrial Park.
“We work with Sing Kong Place, the Culture and Arts Center, and many other partners on performances, shows, exhibitions, sporting activities and community events within the hotel,” Ha explained. “For those who travel to Suzhou, we are their local hosts and their ‘home away from home.’ For local residents, we are their neighbor and friends.”
Featuring 355 spacious guestrooms and suites, a Regency Club, five restaurants and lounges, around 1,400 square-meters of innovative meeting and event space, as well as spa and wellness facilities, Hyatt Regency Suzhou provides a host of modern amenities and conveniences.
Located about ten minutes by car from the Suzhou SIP Railway Station, and one hour’s drive from the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, the hotel offers easy access and is a key connecting point between Suzhou and Shanghai.
Thanks to its great location and advanced facilities, Hyatt Regency Suzhou is a favorite among both business and leisure travelers, according to the GM.
“Suzhou is becoming more of a popular destination. As the city improves and develops, more and more events will come to Suzhou, which will bring more business opportunity to hotels in the city,” he said. “There is still room to improve demand, especially compared with cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. Large-scale meetings, conventions, exhibitions and events are still limited in Suzhou and additional promotional efforts from the tourism bureau, businesses and travel-related partners are needed to further promote this beautiful destination.”
In addition to managing daily operations at Hyatt Regency Suzhou, Ha also serves as Area Vice President, overseeing seven nearby hotels. A major part of both positions is offering support and guidance to members of his staff.
“It is essential to care for our people so they can do their best, whether in life or in work,” he said. “It is my responsibility to pass on the best experiences to the next generation of hoteliers and share my management expertise and insights with all the hotels in my area.”
A lover of cycling and golf, Ha enjoys exploring the Suzhou in his spare time as well as spending quality time with his family and friends.
