New York-inspired bistro to unwind with friends

AFTER a long, stressful day at work, there’s little that will help you wind down more than a drink at a bar with a relaxed vibe. Tribeca, located in the neighborhood around Wuding Road, offers exactly that.

The easy-to-navigate drink list includes creative versions of Bloody Mary and other specials that will please even the pickiest drinkers.

Tribeca is a contemporary, sleek space with a bar area at the center. Graffiti-esque paintings adorn the walls, but other than that, you are reminded of New York in the 1920s. Warm lighting adds a lounge feel.

Tribeca is the type of neighborhood bistro-bar that makes people return — a place to chill with friends, the three men behind Tribeca said.

“My friends and I have been living in Shanghai for many years and the city is like home to us. We love sharing good moments together so we decided to have a place of our own that is not pretentious and it is all about having a good time with others,” Segal Le Hegarat, one of the co-owners, said.

Inspired by New York City’s hippest neighborhoods, the trio created a chic and modern space with a swanky designer twist — a welcoming addition to the quaint Wuding Road strip.

Le Hegarat and his co-owners Clement Brault and Micka Baranes, who all hail from France, have reflected their native on the bistro’s menu, even if they don’t want to be called French.

“We don’t want to be labeled as a French place. That’s why we integrate the graffiti-esque art to add a more hippy, contemporary vibe. The food items are about what we love to eat,” Le Hegarat said.

On a recent visit, Le Hegarat recommended their creative Bloody Mary (68 yuan) as a pre-dinner drink to start a relaxing evening. An innovative take on classic drink, it came with a skewer of shrimp and olive on top of the glass. It presents a mild balance of different spices including chili, onion, garlic, coriander and fish sauce — a very easy drink for an empty stomach. Bacon Bloody Mary is another popular version that has a tropical flavor, made with blue ginger and lemongrass.

The meal began with small plates. Popcorn Chicken (48 yuan) seemed like the best choice since I was in the mood for an easy aperitif night. The chicken was served with a tasty homemade honey mustard dip.

Crispy Cordon Bleu (68 yuan) is made with pork, ham and mozzarella cheese served with a seasonal veggie salsa and fresh coriander sauce. The fresh salsa gave a refreshing balance to the rather meaty roll, a delightful starter to share. Rouleau de Boeuf Tataki (68 yuan) is ideal for any beef lover. The sliced beef roulade is stuffed with veggies and topped with roasted sesame. The marinated green pepper added an interesting texture and flavor when mixed with the beef tataki.

The most popular dishes on the menu are steak and fries, beef burger, beef rossini (tenderloin filet topped with foie gras in a truffle red wine reduction), and some French mains such as Duck Confit and lamb chops. But its seafood section is equally appealing, like the St Jacque Poele (128 yuan): two pan-fried fresh scallops served with risotto, black truffle and parmesan and another two that came with ratatouille.

At Tribeca, happy hour starts from 4pm to 8pm from Tuesday to Friday with an extensive drink list on offer. A glass of spritz or prosecco is priced at 35 yuan while the wine is about the 35 to 38 yuan.
