Nestled between a sandwich shop and yakitori izakaya on the quite Yuyuan Road E., the small bakery CinnaSwirl is specializing on only one baked good: fresh and delicious cinnamon rolls.
Cinnamon rolls are popular with most people, and the fact that the shop has been running successfully for more than a year now is proof that serving only one speciality can work out.
Heather and Jared Turner, a Shanghai-based couple who moved to China from Utah about 6 years ago came up with the idea. The cinnamon roll business started in their home kitchen as delivery operation before they set up a storefront in the Jing’an Temple area.
The small and narrow shop only has one small table and two chairs, and most people come here for takeaway. Sweet cinnamon and caramel aroma fills the air, making it impossible to walk away without one in hand.
Six types of rolls are available — classic, mini, caramel apple, caramel pecan, raisin and walnut, all freshly rolled, swirled and baked in the small shop. A classic cinnamon roll is 15 yuan (US$2.4) and 75 yuan for six while one specialty bun is 21 yuan (95 yuan for six). A box of 12 mini rolls is 85 yuan.
The prices may not be cheap, but once you’ve tasted the rolls, you’ll be coming back for more. The dough is very soft and airy and packed with loads of cinnamon and nuts. Customers choose either cream cheese or caramel sauce as icing and decided wether they want the whole roll dripping with sauce or just lightly covered. The icing is also homemade and tastes sweet and fresh.
Raisin, caramel apple and pecan rolls sell out fast, so be sure to arrive early or place an order online if those are your favorites.
The beverage menu is simple with coffee and juice, ideal for those grabbing a breakfast on the go.
Delivery is also available for an extra fee through Mealbay. Orders need to be placed at least two hours ahead.
