Opposite a perfect mix of fine dining, friendly service

OPPOSITE by Jenson & Hu is a delightfully friendly new venue in the neighborhood of Jianguo and Jiashan roads. It specializes in sophisticated yet approachable European fare that’s perfect for intimate dinners or comfortable weekend brunchs.

It occupies a street-side two-floor garden villa. The first floor is occupied by a lounge/bar with comfortable sofa chairs where one can enjoy creative craft cocktails from Allen Xsu, who previously worked his magic at the speakeasy bar Flask on Shaanxi Road N.

On the second level is a dining area where one can enjoy well-executed European cuisine. The interior is decked in a simplistic style with contemporary furniture well arranged in the light-filled space.

Opposite is the first restaurant from long-time friends Kevin Hu and Jenson Pei. Executive chef Pei excels at exploring regional foods and cooking styles. Hu, who previously opened Mercato by Jean Georges at Three on the Bund, brought his operational and management skills to the collaboration.

On a recent weekend, I had the chance to try the brunch menu. Priced at 168 yuan (US$24.23), one can choose one starter, one soup or salad and a main course, plus a juice or coffee. For an additional 180 yuan per person, you can get two hours of free-flow sparkling wine.

To start the brunch, I opted for the chicken liver pate, honey and grilled breads; while my friend chose ricotta, honey hazelnuts, candy beets, truffle oil and grilled breads. Both were presented in lovely glass jars. The homemade chicken liver pate spread on the bread with honey tasted so good that I kept wanting more. Ricotta cheese was also a good choice for a bread spread.

The daily special main course was the Char siu risotto.

Chef Pei is offering this “dinner item” to guests willing to try the East-meets-West risotto. Chinese barbecue pork rice (Char Siu Fan) is a much-loved Cantonese dish. Hailing from Hong Kong, the chef made a delightful new version of his hometown staple by using Italian risotto instead of Chinese rice.

Several signature dinner items are also included on the brunch menu, such as spicy tuna tartare, avocado yogurt, tomato crispy and duck leg confit.

In addition to the well-made food, the service is impeccable. Hu hired most of the staff from Taipei, where many graduated from a school specializing in hospitality. The attentive staff certainly add to the restaurant’s welcoming, intimate atmosphere.

With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, Opposite is also offering specially designed menus for both occasions.
