Original shows perk up TV landscape

NEW original shows covering a wide range of genres hope to spice things up on websites and TV screens.

Such shows are considered a response to the new State Administration of Radio, Film and Television regulations. The regulator has issued a few rules since last year that restrict domestic satellite channels to importing only one foreign show a year. The goal is to promote more original domestic programs on television and the Internet.

On April 10, the humorous reality show “Are You Normal” will debut on v.qq.com. In each episode celebrities are asked to give straight “yes” or “no” answers to unusual and funny questions. If the answer matches the majority of netizens, they will be labeled as “normal.”

Sample questions include: “is it normal to count the number of tiles while walking; is it normal to take a bath with your pet; and is it normal to check your lover’s e-mail inbox?”

V.qq.com chief producer Tina Ma says some of the questions will reflect the current lifestyles and values of Chinese netizens.

“We try to offer Internet users a brand-new experience by taking part in the survey together with their idols and exchanging views and thoughts,” she says.

On March 29, Dragon TV debuted a new business-based interview program at 10:45pm.

Looking to distinguish itself from the slew of boring business shows on air, “Fortune China” aims to provide insight into the lives of influential entrepreneurs from home and abroad. Real estate tycoon Pan Shiyi will be among the guests.

Topics cover hot financial and social issues. Entrepreneurs are also expected to share some of their secrets to success.

On April 19, “Dance of China” will air on Zhejiang Satellite TV at 9pm. Some of the country’s most talented grassroots dancers will perform and share their stories.

The jury panel includes Hong Kong singer and actor Aaron Kwok, mainland actress Hai Qing and noted modern dancer Jin Xing. They will also mentor the contestants who advance to later rounds.
