Prostrate cancer screening awareness
Early prostate cancer screenings for those most at risk was launched in local communities by Shanghai Cancer Center last Sunday.
Around 3,000 men from six communities will receive free screening on prostate cancer.
It is the nation’s first program to carry out early detection of prostate cancer among those most at risk — men aged over 50 years old and those with a family history of the disease.
Prostate cancer is the sixth leading cause of male cancer in Chinese urban areas. Because of a lack of early screening, around 65 to 70 percent of patients are not detected with the disease until the terminal stage where there is only a 40 to 50 percent chance of surviving longer than five years.
“In the United States, over 90 percent of people with prostate cancer are found in early stage because of early screening. And almost all the patients can survive for over five years, which is considered as recovery by clinical concept,” said Dr Ye Dingwei, vice president of Shanghai Cancer Center, which leads the screening program.
Prostate cancer is a disease related with age and an unhealthy lifestyle. The disease is higher in China’s big cities, Ye said.
The prostate specific antigen test, which finds biomarker in the blood, can identity prostate cancer.
The program which offers free PSA screening on high-risk men in the community was carried out as a trial in seven communities last year.
Among the 660 people screened, 86 were found with abnormal data in the PSA test and 12 were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
All were in the early stage and have started to receive treatment.
“The program is to promote the awareness of prostate cancer screening among those most at risk and disseminate knowledge of prostate cancer prevention and control among the public,” Ye said.
