'Rocket Man' in concert

SUPERSTAR Elton John will rock Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena on November 23, bringing his trademark spectacle and classic songs to China for the first time in a decade.

"Crocodile Rock," "Rocket Man," "Candle in the Wind," "Your Song," "Honky Cat," "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," "Daniel" and many more will be performed by the flamboyant Sir Elton.

One of the all-time great songwriters and recording artists, John will play the piano and wear an array of glittering, outrageous costumes.

At age 65, the British icon is still famously energetic and tours extensively, backed by the Elton John Band, which has been with him since the beginning.

John ranks alongside The Beatles, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley as top-selling artists in music history. Having sold more than 250 million records, he was named the most successful male solo artist in The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artist in 2008.

John is one of the few international superstars to have remained at the pinnacle of the entertainment industry throughout his career.

This year, 20 years since he last topped the album charts in the UK, John returned to No. 1 with "Good Morning to the Night," a collaboration with Australian electronic duo Pnau.

After more than 3,000 live performances, Sir Elton is still pushing back boundaries and setting records.

He arrives in Shanghai mid-way through a three-year residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, where he plays to sold-out audiences with his show "The Million Dollar Piano."

Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he was a renowned pianist on the London music scene of the 1960s before he adopted the stage name Elton John and unleashed his outrageous stage persona as a solo performer. Following a chance meeting with lyricist and long-term collaborator Bernie Taupin in 1967, the Elton John legend began to take shape, transforming the musical prodigy into a global superstar.

His breakthrough hit was "Young Song" in 1970. In the 1970s he amassed 15 smash singles in the US, including No. 1s "Crocodile Rock," "Bennie and the Jets," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Island Girl," and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." His No. 1 albums include "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Caribou," "Elton John's Greatest Hits," "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" and "Rock of the Westies."
