Stage artists to be honored
THE Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Awards is the city?s top prize honoring excellence in theater performing arts in China and abroad. So far it has discovered and honored more than 400 performers from around China.
The curtain will go up on the 22nd edition of the annual awards on April 15. This year 87 Chinese performers compete in almost all types of theater, including traditional Chinese opera, musical and dance, drama and children's theater.
Twenty-nine nominees are vying for four categories - Best Leading Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best New Talent in a Leading Role and Best New Talent in a Supporting Role.
On April 16, the nominated artists will present a performance at the Shanghai Art Theater, displaying their representative works for both the judging panel and local audience.
The awards ceremony will be held on April 17.
This year's Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded to acclaimed Chinese theater critic, scriptwriter and scholar Liu Housheng. Liu, now age 92, has helped preserve many classic old plays of traditional Chinese opera and has nurtured young talents.
On April 15, artists and famous theater critics will present a workshop on the future development of traditional theater and discuss challenges and opportunities.
