Turkish dance drama brings fire to city
Turkish dance drama “The Fire of Anatolia” will heat up wintertime Shanghai with dazzling movements.
“The Fire of Anatolia” will be presented by 120 dancers at Shanghai Grand Stage next Sunday. Turkish belly dance star Saniye Sinem Guven will participate.
The dance drama is based on millennia-old mythology and culture in what is now the Asian part of modern Turkey. The myth of Prometheus stealing fire for humans and triggering war between human and gods helps guide the story.
“It is about a war between justice and evil. The belly dance helps depict the alluring view of an evil world on stage,” said Guven.
The show also embraces elements like tap dance, tango, ballet, jujitsu and even acrobatics.
The music and dance are compiled from almost every region of Anatolia.
“I wanted to present the exchange of civilizations. It is a portrait aiming at the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures, giving universal messages of peace,” said choreographer Mustafa Erdogan, who created “The Fire of Anatolia.”
To try something new in the dance drama, Erdogan combines techniques of different dance forms, which imposes high demands on the dancers.
It is said that about 240 movements are required within one minute in some parts of the performance.
Apart from Shanghai, the dance drama will visit 16 other cities in China.
