A Renaissance for MICE facilities
THE Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel is the tallest Renaissance hotel in the world. It is located in an iconic 60-story tower in the center of one of Shanghai's bustling CBD areas.
The hotel is well-known for its prime location and MICE facilities, and next month it will refresh the meeting and conference rooms on the 10th floor. The ballroom will be redecorated starting in late July and will reopen in September with the latest high-tech equipment, including three digital backdrops.
Renaissance Zhongshan Park is directly connected to Zhongshan Park Station of Metro Line 2, 3 and 4. It only takes 18 minutes from the hotel to Hongqiao International Airport and 50 minutes to Pudong International Airport by Metro Line 2.
"Our fantastic location makes it an easily accessible place for meeting planners and their delegates as well as all our corporate customers," says Robert J. Lohrmann, the general manager.
The hotel offers one of the largest unobstructed grand ballrooms in Puxi, covering 1,250 square meters and seating as many as 1,400 guests. It can be divided into three sections.
It is unique in providing a dedicated conference floor covering 1,800 square meters, with eight multi-purpose function and meeting rooms covering 800 square meters. They feature natural lighting, high-speed Internet access and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.
The hotel has hosted numerous major international events and has been praised by meeting planners and corporations such as P&G, Eaton, Astra Zeneca and Argos Wine Consulting. Guest feedback was overwhelmingly positive about the high level of customer service.
"We continue to build on our solid reputation, often receiving high praise from high-profile company meeting planners and many other industry professionals," Lohrmann says.
The hotel has just been honored as the "Best Meetings and Conventions Hotel" in Shanghai for 2012 by TTG (Travel Trade Gazette) China. The winners of this coveted Travel Agent Award and Travel Supplier Award are determined by votes cast by TTG readers, across the Asia Pacific.
"All TTG Travel Award winners are therefore deemed to be the best in their class by the experts in the MICE industry. We take great pride in winning this distinction for three consecutive years, as it recognizes the many efforts of all our hotel ambassadors, management team and ownership who work so hard to service the MICE industry in China," the general manager says.
Lohrmann, an American, is a 28-year veteran with Marriott International. He was appointed last April following an assignment in Thailand. He chose to return to Shanghai after successfully opening the first Marriott in Shanghai (Hongqiao) in 2000 and staying for four years between 1999 and 2003.
"This city is ever changing for the better and I consider it my New York of the East," Lohrmann says. He enjoys riding a bicycle and exploring the city.
With extensive international experience, he's sensitive to many cultures and tries to fit in. Leading a team of around 500 people at the Renaissance Zhongshan Park (97 percent local Chinese), Lohrmann emphasizes his management as leadership.
"First and foremost, you have to like people, connect well with them and then you can take them with you. My experience has taught me to respect, trust and believe in your people. You must always recognize the good things they do and they will feel appreciated and they will support you and remain loyal," Lohrmann says of his leadership approach.
When he talks about the fierce competition in the hotel industry, he says he hopes the international hotels can work more closely together and do their part to promote Shanghai as the No. 1 priority to attract more meetings and conference business.
"We (Shanghai) are competing with Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea in the international MICE business," Lohrmann adds.
Currently, the hotel customers can enjoy three special benefits when they book an early-bird group meeting including 30 guestrooms per night, if they book meeting two months in advance. The benefits include triple points on Marriott Rewards Program for the booker; complimentary morning coffee break and standard audio visual setup, one complimentary guest room for every 30 guest rooms booked per night.
