Creating MICE with excitement

SHANGHAI Marriott Hotel Changfeng Park emphasizes on celebration and excitement philosophy for every MICE (meetings, incen-tives, conferences and events) delegate, says the hotel's general manager, Rauf Malik.

And with a 90 percent return rate among MICE customers, Malik can see that this attention to achieving the highest standards pays off.

"Our tailor-made personal service offers our MICE clients celebration and excitement, something a bit special," explains Malik.

An example can be seen in the hotel's restaurants, which offer guests, quite literally, a taste of home.

"People traveling from all around the world miss food from home. We have seven restaurants and bar with Japanese, Korean, Indian cuisines and several kinds of Chinese delicacies to meet their needs," Malik says.

But attention to detail begins long before MICE guests check in.

The hotel has a dedicated conference service team of at least 18 people - including the general manager and associates from a number of departments - which plans tailor-made services foreach MICE group a month priorto its arrival.

They brainstorm and create a complete plan based on the background and number of participants, the theme of the event, must-do lists for the group and places they want to visit.

Based on client requirements, the hotel offer amenities that create a celebratory environment.

This could take the form of a something as simple as a towel in the washroom the same color as the company's logo; a small cake with the company's logo on it as a welcome from the hotel; or it could be a prayer mat or a Bible placed in a room.

Exciting large-scale examples of the team's work include an outdoor dining room with capacity for 1,000 people set up in the surrounding parkland - complete with portable kitchen and buses to ferry guests.

The conference service team can also arrange teambuilding activities for organizations, such as practicing tai chi or taking a cruise on the river and special local tours to an aquarium or go-karting.

Associates are the key to achieving exciting high-end service, says Malik.

"We understand our associates and motivate them to treat work as a celebration," he explains.

And it also helps that the Shanghai Marriott Changfeng Park provides the ideal environment for MICE events. The 770-square-meter Grand Ballroom, which can be divided into three sections, holds up to 700 guests. There are also 13 function rooms with state-of-the-art meeting facilities, including wireless high-speed Internet access and high-definition LED screens.

The hotel also has a 24-hour gym, a 250-square-meter swimming pool, and a wine bar with panoramic views - ideal for relaxing after long meetings.

Located amidst beautiful parkland with a river running aside, the hotel is also near Parkside Plaza, perfect for a spot of shopping, and 15 minutes' drive from Hongqiao International Airport.

Malik, with 36 years' experience in the hospitality industry in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Malaysia and Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Beijing in China, values a hands-on approach.

The general manager, who begins the day with a 4:45am workout, likes to greet guests, estimating he gets to know some 95 percent of them.

"High-end personalized service is the key to ensuring customers come back and make our service to the next level," says Malik.
