Party! Party!...or party pooper?

AS office party season approaches, water cooler chat is turning to what kind of celebrations companies will be organizing this year - and what prizes will be up for grabs in traditional lucky draws.

Shanghai Daily talks to several employees about their New Year's office parties, whether they have fun, and if they reckon this year's will go with a bang or be a damp squib.

Q: What are your company's parties like? Do you enjoy them? What's your expectation of this year's?

Louisiel Wang, 28, operation supervisor for a German-backed company

I always want the lucky draw prize to be 10 days extra annual leave - but so far, we haven't got that! Compared to fancy digital products and travel coupons, more time off to relax sounds more appealing.

Our annual parties don't feature many innovative ideas. We just have dinner together, watch singing and dancing performances by colleagues and have the lucky draw. I think I might enjoy watching performances by my bosses - that would be fun!

And it would be good to have better food at the party. I think everybody would like that.

Zhang Qian, 35, sales, chemical company

I'm not really looking forward to the party because we have a new boss who's stingy, so I don't think it will be fantastic.

To be fair, our annual party is never lavish, but the atmosphere is friendly. It's a good opportunity for colleagues to improve relationships or mend fallouts from over the year.

As for the lucky draw, I've always wanted an SLR camera but I don't think the company will have one as a prize. So maybe a micro single lens camera is Okay for me.

Lena Ye, 28, employee with a communications company

I don't have many expectations about the prizes, but I do love our annual parties. Last year, the company gave us lottery tickets to scratch, which was fun and innovative.

In fact, I don't care much about the prizes because I'm happy with most things. What I want is a good time with friends and colleagues.

Babara Li, 29, editor for a local weekly newspaper

Last year, we went to a farmhouse and stayed the night there. It was dark there, and we let off fireworks. It was really amazing and impressive. I think this year we'll go to another province or at least an outlying area for the New Year party.

I've never been lucky in the prize draw as I have never got anything I truly wanted. I want travel coupons but my company loves to give us digital products. I like digital products, but I can afford them by myself. This year, I hope my boss will be more generous, but I don't hold much hope!

May Wang, 31, publicity director for a real estate company

What I want is very simple and practical: a bonus or something useful. Our party is not very spectacular, so our focus is always on the prizes. However, I'm sometimes a little frustrated when I get a prize I don't want, because it's useless to me. But it does have value, so it's not appropriate to throw it away. But for me, a bonus would be best.

Christina Martonova, 30, Slovakian, employee with an IT company

Actually, I don't care much about annual parties. My company has a very grand New Year party, where thousands of employees gather in a big venue, such as an indoor stadium. I seldom go because it's too crowded. I believe holidays are for friends and family, so I spend my party time with them.
