Taking a long-haulapproach to partying

END of year parties can be occasions for a spot of socializing and extra rewards for employees - if the bosses are generous enough.

And as the year's end approaches, the annual meeting becomes a hot topic for staff and management alike. More and more companies are hosting their annual parties in other cities in China or even overseas, turning the routine program of dinner and a lucky draw into a much-anticipated travel extravaganza.

The parties are normally held at hotels or restaurants, but the background can vary. Here are some popular destinations home and abroad where companies host annual their meetings.

Hainan

Known as "China's Hawaii," Sanya's allure lies in its soft sand, azure water, abundant sunshine and swaying palms. The southernmost city in China in Hainan Province has 20-kilometer-long stretches of beach.

There are a large number of resort hotels in Sanya, which promise beautiful views of ocean, making the city a popular destination of annual parties and meetings, where attendees can expect a laid-back break from the urban treadmill. The city's tropical climate is another attraction for those hoping to escape the freezing weather in parts of China.

Yalong Bay is among the most beautiful coastal stretches in China, boasting brilliantly colored coral and teeming with sealife. Other top spots include Dadonghai and Wuzhizhou Island, a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, paragliding, snorkeling, scuba diving, plus trips in glass-bottomed boat are popular activities here.

Jilin

If Hainan is famous for its tropical weather, then Jilin in northeast China is renowned for its more chilly charms, offering a unique glamor for an annual party.

In Jilin city there are numerous ski resorts, providing an icy but fun alternative for companies seeking to offer staff something special.

Among the city's best-known attractions is its "snow willows" - spectacularly frost-rimed trees along the banks of the Songhua River. These are regarded as one of China's four natural wonders, alongside Guilin's mountains and streams, Yunnan's stone forest and the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.

Trains and buses run to Changbai Mountain, a nature reserve whose forests are home to more than 200 varieties of wildlife, including tigers, leopards and deer. Within the forests are numerous hot springs. The mountain also has a spectacular waterfall, the source of the Songhhua River.

On top the mountain is the Tianchi Lake, in a volcanic crater. Here travelers have reported seeing "water monsters," though sceptics say the cold lake is unlikely to be able to support monster-sized creatures.

Thailand

Popular movies - such as 2010 Chinese romantic comedy "Go Lala Go!" - often feature Thailand as a destination for company-organized activities, usually as a reward for good performance.

Thailand is popular with many travelers for its great food, fascinating culture and great beaches. Part of its charm lies in its geographic diversity - mountains, valleys, beaches and plains.

Attractions include the Buddhist temples and palaces of Bangkok, alluring beaches and islands, such as Hua Hin and Phuket, plus the tropical forests of Khao Yai National Park and Heo Suwat Waterfall in Khao Yai National Park.

The famous sour and spicy cuisine alone is a good reason for many to make a trip to Thailand, with curries, fruit shakes, stir fries and fresh fish cooked in what seems like a zillion ways on the menu.

And of course, a must-do experience is a traditional Thai massage. At once relaxing and energizing, this has a history stretching back more than 2,500 years.

Vietnam

Vietnam offers French colonial charm, Eastern culture and ancient ruins, plus spectacular coastaland highland scenery.

Marguerite Duras' semi-autobiographical novel "The Lover" (1984) and 1992 film "Indochine" have helped raise the profile of Vietnam among the Chinese public.

It is gaining popularity among Chinese tourists, making it an ideal location for annual meetings and parties.

Famous scenic spots include Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for thousands of limestone karst formations, mountains and islands, the ancient town of Hoi An, which is sometimes called "Little Lijiang," a reference to Lijiang in China's Yunnan Province, and Da Lat, sometimes called "Little Paris," which is rich in colonial architecture.

And beach bums will not be disappointed either. Da Nang's sandy white beach is said by locals to be the best in the country.

Australia

Most workers would be thrilled to learn that their company was holding its annual party in Australia, and a few do head down under for their end-of-year bashes.

Heart Reef is a famous attraction in the Great Barrier Reef, off Queensland. One of the natural wonders of the world, the reef blends the brilliant colors of coral and fish with the turquoise and blue of water and sky.

A helicopter ride offers a bird's eye view of the reef, while for a closer look try snorkeling or scuba diving.

Wildlife among the reef includes dugong, green turtles, dolphins and whales, more than 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 types of mollusc and more than 200 species of bird.

The Gold Coast in Queensland is famous for its subtropical climate, surfing beaches, canal and waterway systems, theme parks, nightlife, and rainforest hinterland.

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is one of Australia's most recognizable natural landmarks. A large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory, the area around the formation is the site of a plethora of springs, waterholes, caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a World Heritage Site.
