Beware of thieves

MANY people have fallen victim to phishing scams that lure users to virtually identical but fake sites of banks or e-commerce platforms where they inadvertently disclose private information.

Credit card numbers should be kept secure. Thieves can quickly duplicate cards, so it’s important that numbers, especially the last three digits, not be leaked on any dubious websites.

Fraudsters have recently started hacking into free WiFi at public venues to acquire online accounts and passwords and steal identities.

Telephone scams are always a problem. In some cases, swindlers call targets, tell them their bank account has been breached and tell them to transfer funds to a “safe account.” Sometimes they say a relative has been severely injured in a traffic accident and ask for funds for emergency surgery.

Scammers may pose as police officers, telling people they have been fined for late payment on bills or credit cards. To avoid legal complications, they are urged to transfer funds money to a specific account.
