Report shows troubling lapses in security
ACCORDING to the results of a recent Internet security report from the central online safety and informatization office, many people in China engage in activities which could compromise the safety and security of their online accounts — both those used for social purposes as well as banking and personal finances.
According to the report, which included survey data gathered from over 250,000 people, about 80 percent of respondents said they do not regularly change their online bank account codes, while 17 percent said they never change it.
Meanwhile, over 70 percent of respondents said they use the same password for several online accounts, including for social media services. This percentage reaches 82 percent among teenagers.
And, while using free public Wi-Fi terminals increases the odds of having one’s account data stolen, about 80 percent of respondents admitted to casually connecting with such hotspots without concern for safety.
TIPS for account safety
• Do not give your payment password or dynamic password to online shop owners; even those who say they need it to process a refund.
• No password is needed for refunds. Make your password as varied and complicated as possible. Do not use the same ID and password for your bank account that you use for social media.
• Though most bank websites are usually equipped with high-level security, the same is not true for every social website.
• Be alert when your phone does not work properly. It might be the case that somebody has reported losing a cellphone with your number and applied for another SIM card with telecommunications officials. Such people might be able to access your cellphone-linked accounts.
• Do not click any links received via SMS or for websites that you are not familiar with. This may allow Trojan Horse programs to access your phone or computer.
