Would you help?

ALLEN Gu, 26, engineer

“I will definitely offer my help, but I won’t do it all by myself. I will ask a stranger to be a witness, so if something bad happens, I won’t be involved in the lawsuit.”

Sindy Ye, 30, editor

“Though I would be a bit of worried, I would help whoever falls seriously on the street. There are many cameras in public places in Shanghai, which will provide evidence if I am a victim of extortion.”

Simon Wang, 22, university student

“I wouldn’t help. It’s none of my business. I don’t care about things happening to others unless they are acquaintances. And you don’t get to judge those who choose to ignore. Based on all the bad news recently, not helping is a way of self-protection. So what’s wrong about this?”

Cathy Zhou, 27, accountant

“I wouldn’t go directly to someone who fell on the street and pick him or her up, but I would call the police or an ambulance. If someone falls seriously and I don’t know why, I think the best way is to let the professionals handle the situation. But I’d wait until the ambulance comes.”

William Xu, 48, manager at a state-owned bank

“I would call the police or an ambulance, but I will never pick up the person myself. I know that many people are honest and be grateful after helping them, but still there is a certain chance that you will end up in trouble. That’s also what I tell my daughter and son.”

Grace Lu, 35, stock broker

“I’d be willing to help. I always believe that most of the people in such a situation are good. I still remember one day I saw an old man falling on the street during heavy rain when I was on the bus. People rushed past and no one offered help. That’s so sad. I think the media should be responsible for this. They like to report sensational stories, such as the Peng Yu case, and make them into a big splash to attract readers. But that situation was only representative of a tiny minority of cases.”
