Young women missing a benefit

STATISTICS shows that there are about 11 million migrant workers in Shanghai, most of whom range from 20 to 34 years old.

Over 5 million are said to be women, and more than 80 percent of them are not aware of free annual gynecological exams, according to Zhang Hongyan of PLA No. 411 Hospital in Shanghai.

Though the hospital, together with the Shanghai Municipal Trade Union, launched a charity project providing free exams to female migrant workers in Shanghai in 2009, only about 70,000 have taken advantage since then.

Some of the women still feel awkward about gynecological exams and may be leery of the possible results. Some reject treatments even if problems are diagnosed.
