Autumn/Winter 2012 Makeup Trends

THIS fall, designers bring us a new palette inspired by folklore elements. The end result? An exploration of beauty on a global level, translating to vibrant colors, a combination of Goth and fairytale and lots of adornments.

? Multi-Toned Eyes

The eyes no doubt have it all this fall. Splashes of blue, teal and red covered models' lids for a "Birds of Paradise" look at Prabal Gurung. The Robert Cavalli show showed us an equally gorgeous jewel-toned eye with green, violet and a touch of gold on the inner corner. And who could forget the smoky eye with orange brows and purple and white liner at Prada?

Quick Tip: To recreate the look for everyday, blend up to three colors on the eyes. Color-wise, blue, green, purple, red and orange are the hottest this season. Feeling color-shy? Load your upper and bottom lashes with coats of color mascara as seen at Stella McCartney. Alternately, add a pop of bright eyeliner along the upper lashline, like the 60s look at Anna Sui. Keep the line thicker as you reach the outer corner and wing it out for a modern, cat eye effect. Finish with bare skin and muted lips.

? Ethereal Goth

Fall has always been the season of dark pouts and this year, designers like YSL, Givenchy and Etro wowed us with an interesting take. Eyes bathed in icy, pearly and soft metallic hues were paired against the darkest berries, wines and even black lips in both matte and glossy finishes and set against flawless, dewy skin. A perfect balance between good and evil that was fresh and modern.

Quick Tip: Turn your favorite red lipstick into a vampy double by mixing it with a black cream eyeshadow or gel eyeliner. If you are not quite ready for the dark side, just stick to a gloss version or a stain.

? Glitz Galore

Get your bling on because glitz is not just for the holidays anymore. At Miu Miu, Chanel and Betsy Johnson, makeup artists glued sequins and jewels onto models' faces, brows and lids while lips were given a holographic effect with glitter on the Kinder Aggugini runway.

Quick Tip: To prevent glitter overload, always focus on highlighting one feature at a time. If you want to play up the eyes, keep the rest of your face simple with clean skin, neutral cheeks and understated lips. Love the idea of a glitter lip, pair with barely-there shadow and muted blush.

Autumn/Winter Haircare Tips

Between the indoor heat, dry air, wind, static and snow, the cold weather can really bring on a new set of hair havocs. To prevent hair from misbehaving and looking dull, try these tricks below.

Shampoo less and suds-free. The best way to combat frizzy hair is to avoid over shampooing, which can strip the natural oils that keep your scalp and hair healthy. Steer clear of shampoos that contain sulphates as well, which are drying and irritating to the scalp.

Give your mane a treat. Invest in a good deep-conditioning product that is rich in protein and use it once or twice a week to repair and help prevent damage. Leave the product overnight then rinse it out in the morning for best results.

Oil It Up. While Moroccan Oil is all the buzz in the US, women in Japan have been using Camellia Oil for centuries to keep their locks shiny and tangle-free. Other oils that are good for your hair are Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil and Sweet Almond Oil.

Seal the cuticle for super shiny strands. Hair can look damaged and dry when the shaft is roughed up and the cuticle lifted. To keep the cuticle closed, rinse your hair with cool water and use the nozzle attachment on your blow dryer to streamline the airflow downward.

Use a paddle brush to distribute the scalp's natural oils to the ends of the hair and control static. To tame extra frizzies, spray a little hairspray directly onto the brush and run it through the hair.
