Avoid makeup woes on your special day

IN the middle of hot and humid July, makeup that is clear and beautiful is vital for your big day. Here are a few tricks for applying the bride's makeup so that it will look natural in photographs and last through an outdoor ceremony without melting.

For base and foundation

? Don't forget to prep your skin! Exfoliate once to twice a week up to the week leading to the wedding and moisturize religiously to ensure skin is smooth and supple. This will help makeup glide on much better and stay on longer.

? Apply your makeup in thin layers to help make it last. Blend and blend some more to make sure there are no harsh lines.

? Nothing beats a dewy, radiant complexion to make you shine on your big day. To achieve the glow, mix equal parts of moisturizer into your foundation. "Those with acne, however, are better off going matte to wash out the bumps," says MAC Cosmetics Senior Makeup Artist John Stapleton. To further distract from problem areas, "do not apply color directly over textured skin. Focus on the eyes or lips instead."

? Curb your urge to use a lighter foundation to brighten up your complexion - your foundation should always match your neck. Instead, try a color-correcting primer like Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer to perk up a dull complexion. Another reason not to use a lighter foundation? The flash of cameras can make foundation appear lighter, making the two-tone effect even worse.

? High definition cameras tend to flatten the complexion and emphasize red tones. Use a yellow-based foundation to even out skin and contour with a matte, neutral-toned bronzer to bring out your features.

For eyes

? Forget the trends and dramatic changes. You want to look beautiful but still feel comfortable and confident. Stick to the classics and what you know works for you. You can always save that blue eyeshadow or orange lipstick for some other occasion.

? Tears of joy are inevitable during those emotional moments. Make sure you use an eyeshadow primer to prep the area and stick to waterproof or water-resistant cream eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara.

? Eyebrows can make or break a look. If you need to get them (along with any facial hair) waxed, threaded, trimmed or plucked, do so at least a few days prior to the wedding to avoid irritation and redness.

For lips and cheeks

? When it comes to the lips, opt for brighter shades of pink, rose and plum instead of neutral and pale colors, which can look washed out in pictures. "Choose a lipstick that is one to two shades brighter than what you normally wear. Not something intense but maybe a few colors up," according to makeup artist Bobbi Brown.

? Minimize the use of glitter, shimmer and light-reflective makeup as they tend to look distorted and harsh under flash photography. Stick to cream formulas when possible and highlight only the high points of the cheekbones and under the brow.

? For a flushed-within look, try a heavier application of cream blush under your foundation.

Other tips

? Always do a makeup trial to avoid unpleasant surprises on your wedding day. Take lots of pictures under different lighting and with a flash. You want the finished look to look good in person and in pictures.

? Carry a small touch-up kit with you in case of any mishaps. A few essentials to include? A pressed powder compact, concealer, blotting papers, Q-tips, lipstick or gloss and eye drops.
