Creating innovative pieces to Diez for
IN an ocean of "all looks the same" jewelry, work by German designer Saskia Diez stands out.
Truly captivating and poetic, the designer draws inspiration from her thoughts; from playing around with materials; from pieces of clothing; and from small everyday details or moods.
Whatever materials used, her designs are characterized by great elegance, at the same time very delicate and sexy, yet not flashy. Diez talked to Shanghai Daily about her creations and inspirations.
How did you get into the world of jewelry and why did you start making jewelry in the first place?
Ever since I was a little girl I've been making jewelry. I took a break when I grew older as I thought I should do something more serious, but came back to it during my studies when I took part in a design contest. I created bracelets that served as wrist weights but looked like minimalist modern jewelry. I had an exhibition, some buyers - Moss from NY and Gallery deux poissons from Tokyo - saw them and wanted to order.
So you decided to launch your own jewelry line?
Yes. I decided to go into production, to launch a label, with packaging, website and everything. But I was doing everything alone at that time, on a very small scale. With a lot of work, a lot of fun and great passion I built up the brand. I went to Paris to present my collection there and was very successful. And I had a lot of luck, I guess.
What inspires your design style?
Everything can be inspiring. For me, it's mostly more about taking the time to look; taking the time to think; taking the time to dream. A lot develops during conversations with myself, during a work on a material, on a technique, on a theme. Usually, I work on several new lines at the same time.
What is Saskia Diez known for and what makes your collection special?
It might be my personal approach that you can feel in my creations that makes them special. Stylewise, I am known for delicacy, details, elegance and proportions.
Which art jewelry artists have had the most profound impact on your work?
Actually, I don't look around so much at what other jewelry artists are doing. I'd rather listen to myself and see what my personal view on jewelry is and try to find a way to express that.
Who are some your loyal followers?
A lot of my followers are working in fashion, as designers, stylists, editors, models; and a lot are working in product and furniture design, graphics, photography and architecture.
What's the next art jewelry trend?
I think there's a demand for special things. In my case, I think this is something more related to a feeling, to a mood, to a connection with that piece you are wearing, rather than resulting from being flashy and loud.
Where can we see, and buy your creations?
You can see and purchase everything on www.saskia-diez.com. In addition, a selection of department stores sell Saskia Diez, like Colette in Paris, Murkudis in Berlin, LN-CC in London, Tomorrowland in Tokyo.
What's next for you?
I'm working on a perfume together with a great Berlin-based perfumer which is a completely new experience for me. A lot of my followers are men, and since my first line for men was a great success, I am working on some more men's jewelry. A series of leather bags, with a new production process, is another subject that keeps me busy these days. And of course, the next jewelry line is on its way.
