Fashionistas show their style

Beijing-born independent fashion designer Liu Lu left a career in the United States to pursue fashion, art and creation in China. Her label Luvon by Liu Lu is popular among sophisticated Chinese urban women. She studied in Paris and at the Parsons School of Design in New York, where she received the Golden Thimble Award in 2006.

My personal style is casual chic.

The best outfit I’ve worn for a special occasion was the dress I made out of a curtain for my senior benefit fashion show in New York in 2005. People couldn’t tell which brand I was in since I made it myself, while everyone else was in expensive labels.

I don’t follow any fashion trends. I create trends.

I don’t shop for clothing anymore since I am creating them myself with my label. But I do purchase accessories. I think the best accessories are from small markets, especially from the street markets when traveling. You basically collect all the culture by shopping.

If I have to limit my shopping to one neighborhood in Beijing, I would say the new trendy place called Parkview Green, which creates a good blend between art and fashion.

My favorite fashion brand would always be Luvon by Liu Lu.

I admire several designers, such as Coco Chanel, Haider Hackerman, Yuji Yamomoto.

I don’t have any style icon, because I believe if we pay too much attention to others, we will start losing focus on ourselves, which I think is the most important.

I literally haven’t shopped for any garments for three years. My last purchased item was an accessory piece.

The fashion item I’m eyeing next will be probably a hat.

I don’t collect anything. I don’t have the habit to hold onto old memories.

My signature perfume is a tailor-made special perfume that my aroma therapist friend created to suit my personality. She chose a combination of scents to fit my energy and character.

The most memorable place I’ve traveled is Bali. I attended a four-day wedding celebration trip with my friends and we discovered the place together. It was a very unique experience for me.

The best thing about living in Beijing is that people don’t judge you by your look and I feel more relaxed here than anywhere else.

The last book I’ve read is “Conversation with God” by Neale Donald Walsch.

Except Beijing, the city I would love to live in is New York, which would be my next stop.Richard Lu is the creative director and founder of Instar Group, an integrated marketing communications company.

Lu has a strong network with celebrities and socialites. His know-how and close relationships formed over the years are an asset to the luxury brand.

My personal style is smart casual. I like to keep things simple, but I tend to add a touch of detail to brighten up my outfit, such as pocket squares and watches.

The best outfit I’ve worn was a set of blazers, pants and loafers, with a touch of accessories like a watch.

I usually buy blazers and suits. It’s classy and gives off a clean look to the entire outfit without being too casual.

If I have to limit my shopping to one neighborhood in Shanghai, I would say Plaza 66 or Tom Ford Boutique Store. Plaza 66 has a really nice shopping environment with various brands and Tom Ford Boutique is one of my favorite places to shop.

My favorite fashion brand is Tom Ford. Its attention to detail and precision on the tailoring of clothing really draws me to the brand.

The designer I most admire is Tom Ford, because he is able to design clothing that is both simple and unique, which is especially difficult for men’s wear.

My signature perfume is from Tom Ford. I think that Tom Ford fragrance really separates itself from the traditional types of fragrances. Not only is the scent unique, I also like the outfit of the product, simple yet classic.

The best gift I ever received was a Patek Philippe watch from my mom. One of Patek Philippe’s main values is heritage, so being given the watch by my mother is really meaningful to me. The combination of the brand’s quality, values, tradition and my mother’s love for me makes the gift truly significant.

I frequently travel to Europe, and Milan and Florence were definitely very memorable for me. While Milan is one of the most iconic cities for fashion, Florence carries the rich culture and history of Italy, so traveling to these two destinations really combines these elements together, and you get the whole experience.

Every city has its own uniqueness, and for Shanghai it is definitely its diversity. There are different people from different nationalities, so the international atmosphere really allows you to broaden your viewpoint and embrace a variety of cultures. Yet, in certain areas of Puxi, there is also the authentic Shanghai culture, so it is a city that embraces diversity and also maintains its own traditions. That’s what I love about Shanghai.
