In time with Rolex mentoring
ROLEX sends invitations to great artists in the fields of dance, film, literature, music, theater, visual arts and architecture, asking them to provide a one-year mentorship to guide and foster young, up and coming artists with great potential.
This biennial programme - the Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative - was launched in June 2002 with the objective of helping perpetuate the world's artistic heritage.
Run from Rolex's headquarters in Geneva, it seeks out gifted young artists from around the world and brings them together with great masters for a year of creative collaboration in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.
To assist them, each pair is assigned a Rolex staff member to help with logistics. At the end of the year, Rolex invites participants and guests to celebrate the program's achievements at a gala event.
Currently in its sixth cycle, a unique meet-the-media session was held at Bund 27 in Shanghai last month at The Rolex Experience. Asia's premier dancer and choreographer, Lin Hwai-min, attended with his Brazilian protege, Eduardo Fukushima, also a dancer and choreographer, to share their thoughts and insights for the past one-year of exchange.
Lin started as a member of the consultant team when the program began in 2002. Rolex brought the relationship one step closer by inviting him to be the mentor for the dance section this time round. Lavish in his praise for his protege who came from the other side of the world, Lin said that despite the fact Eduardo was not a trained dancer, his dance is expressive, making him different from others. Lin sees him as a young dancer full of potential.
"When I looked at Eduardo, I saw a young Brazilian man full of vitality and came to a decision for my choice of protege," said Lin.
With full sponsorship from Rolex, Fukushima moved to live in Taiwan. On top of that, he was closely in sync with trainings and participated actively in Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, founded by Lin, to learn more. With the group, Eduardo also visited many cities in Asia - a new experience for him.
Lin said the mentor-protege relationship is not intended to construct a replica of him, but a process to mould Fukushima, who has the potential to create a legend of his own.
For Fukushima, Lin has taken the roles of a teacher and father at the same time, bringing him wide benefits through the year.
At the end of the event, Fukushima shouted out to young dancers - including himself - to possess the courage to question self and is always motivated for greater improvement.
Rolex has documented the year of mentoring to give exposure to the proteges. A film crew, a photographer and a writer record the collaboration between mentor and protege. A website - rolexmentorprotege.com - also fully documents the program.
Since the launch of the Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative in 2002, 310 artists and other luminaries have taken part. Program participants contribute from across the globe, building a Rolex community of artists spanning more than 40 countries that grows with each year.
