Seasoned winter styles

FOR our second issue of StyleHai this year, we've scoured the fall/winter collections of established brands for items that look stylish, yet last longer than a season. This fall we've seen a move back toward darker colors but with splashes of personality. Here are our picks.

Chanel

This fall and winter statement necklaces and cuffs are back with a vengeance. This huge metal necklace with a set of three purple semiprecious stones from Chanel's fall/winter 2012-13 collection is stunning - bold and expressive, adding a bit of jazz to the colder weather. The Chanel cuff in a gold hue is also an attention-grabbing item.

G-Star

A navy blue wool coat is one of the pieces from Marc Newson's G-Star collection this season. Newson has worked a number of classic styles to give them a modern twist. The collection's broad denim range is complemented by a wool pea coat, a suede jacket and a wool jacket. Details include technical zips and patterns based on architectural paper.

Patek Philippe

After being based in the Bund 18 building for seven years, Patek Philippe has moved to the historic building at No. 33 Waitanyuan, also on the Bund, the former residence of the British Consul General.

With this move, Patek Philippe has opened its first "maison" in Asia, with status and functions comparable to the Patek Philippe salon in Geneva. The brand has three salons; in Geneva, London and Paris.

Covering an area of 1,228 square meters, the Shanghai maison is not only a showcase for watchmaking masterpieces but also provides guests with a special atmosphere, communicating the brand's prestige accumulated over 173 years.

Currently, Patek Philippe is holding a "special timepieces exhibition" at the maison. This showcases 23 rare handcrafted timepieces, all of which are unique or parts of limited series.

GPHG 2012 China (Shanghai) Exhibition

The Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix (GPHG) 2012 was held last week at Bund 18. During the three-day event, watch specialists and collectors shared insights about current trends and viewed some extraordinary creations from watchmakers. With the assistance of event organizers, independent watchmakers from Geneva joined big names in showcasing their latest innovations.

The Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix was established by Edipresse Group in 2001 with the aim of recognizing the best creations, innovations and operations in the field of watchmaking.

Triumph Inspiration Award

BRITISH student Sian Whitefoot, of De Montfort University, has taken top prize in the 2012 Triumph Inspiration Award for lingerie design. Following a design brief of "Dragons and Butterflies," Whitefoot's work was inspired by the first cycle of metamorphosis.

Alla Polozenko from Italy, whose work draws inspiration from Chinese art, took second prize, while Luca Beke from Hungary was third with her work, "Reborn Warrior."

Young designers from 31 countries entered this year's competition. The jury included Italian Vogue Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani, Hong Kong singer actress Karen Mok and Chinese designer Uma Wang.
