Showing her mettle through gemstones

A GOOD outfit can be taken to another level by a great piece of jewelry. And there's no need to spend a fortune; taste and elegance are far more important.

Claudia Pean, a native of Austria, aims to offer this through her. "The world is filled with beautiful gemstones and I like to show my customers pieces of jewelry that are not simply gold and silver," she told Shanghai Daily.

"I combine pearls - fresh and saltwater - with gemstones and Murano glass from Italy. The fittings are 18-carat gold-plated or 925 sterling silver clasps imported from Europe."

Pean, who had previously worked for a pharmaceutical company, moved to Cairo in 2005 through her husband's job, where she started to design her first pieces. She reckons an aptitude for the craft is in her genes, as her grandfather was a jeweller.

The move to Egypt provided inspiration. "In Cairo, I saw all these wonderful materials in local markets such as Khan Kalili, and decided to make jewelry a business," she explained.

"I'm so proud because my customers always tell me that I am the only one who can mix and match different material and colors together so well."

Pean sources materials from many countries. "My gemstones are imported from places like India, the US, Austria, Brazil and China, each with its own meaning."

She says MyCaluma pieces are suitable for any woman and can be worn to all kinds of occasions, from the office to parties. Prices range from 450 yuan (US$72) to 2,500 yuan.

Pean is now bringing her jewelry to China, adapting her collection for Chinese women, and seeing them adapt too.

"Initially, my necklaces were considered too big for Chinese customers, however I have increasingly seen that Chinese women like my designs," she said.

"They like to show something special from Europe, as until now they were more used to wearing quite sophisticated jewelry. That's why I have also adjusted to the Chinese market since I moved here."

"Chinese women are becoming more and more confident with what they wear, and understand how to combine fashion with a unique piece of jewelry."
