The look: Glittering eyes and wine-red lips

Heavily influenced by the gothic, grunge and punk elements of the autumn/winter 2013 collection, makeup this season is all about feeling. Lips are drenched in sensuous shades of crimson and wine while eyes dazzle in glitter and 3D elements or washes of moody grays.

• Moody eyes

While the smoky eye trend is still going strong, we see sheerer hues this season. Washes of slate, asphalt, lead and taupe are blended onto the eyes for a sense of mystery and moodiness.

At Richard Chai Love, taupe eyeshadow covered the entire eye area and fanned out to the sides. For a hooded effect at Alexander Wang, the lid was bare while a frosty steel shadow was dragged from the crease all the way up to the brows. At Prada, sheer layers of gray shadows were smudged over the lid and topped with gloss for depth; while 3.1 Phillip Lim showed “uptown sophistication” with a monochrome look — a wash of coffee-hued shadow and a brown-toned lip. At the extreme was Altuzarra — a cool-gray on the upper lid was paired with a warm red copper on the lower eye for a clashing effect.

Extra tip: Gray shadows “flatten” the eyes. Curl your lashes and apply more mascara for  definition.

• Glittering eyes

The glitter streak continues on the runway this fall. At Donna Karan, makeup artist Diane Kendal created a modern twist on the smoky eye by mixing glitter with a dark gray cream shadow and adding gloss on top. A “juxtaposition between winter and summer” at Thakoon was achieved with chunky gold glitter over a dark midnight blue smoky eye. At Chanel, models’ eyes were decked out with silver sequins glued onto the lashlines and lashes for a 3D effect.

Extra tip:  To help glitter stay on, use a cream shadow as a base.

• Dark lips

Ranging from deep rose, wine stained to dark plums, autumn/winter 2013 brings us several variations of the red lip.

At Derek Lam, makeup artist Tom Pecheux mixed different shades of brown, maroon and burgundy for a saturated stain on the lips and paired it with a touch of metallic shimmer in the center of the eyelid. Kenneth Cole showed a similar take, with the lips painted  bright red in the center and contrasted with dark purple on the sides. At Bibhu Mohapatra,  makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury combined a wet, metallic eye with dark cherry lips. Last but not least, was the glossy dark purple lip — courtesy of red lipstick mixed with purple eyeliner and lacquered with gloss — creating the utmost sophistication at Veronique Branquinho.

Extra tip:  With the lips being the focus of the look, remember to keep skin clean and evened out with foundation and cheeks minimally defined.
