Tips for spring skincare
WITH cold, hard and dry winter gone, spring is finally on the doorstep. Yes, we can hardly wait for warmer weather, but don't take spring skincare lightly. During the transition from winter to spring to summer, skin is more prone to all sorts of problems. But fret not - StyleHai will guide you through the essentials of springtime skincare.
Even for skin that's not too sensitive, everyone may encounter some skin conditions in spring. Here is what you may encounter and our advice:
Skin becomes sensitive and gets allergic reactions, such as rashes and itchiness. Skin allergies can be a result of allergens such as willow catkin and pollens. Those with dry skin are more prone to allergic reactions than those with other skin types.
Solution: Change some, if not all, skincare products to "sensitive" lines in spring. Always keep an emollient cream at hand to soothe inflammation. Skip toner and apply emollient cream right after face cleansing if irritation is serious.
Tips for sensitive skin: Use cleansing gel or cleansing cream, which is easy on the skin, instead of cleansing oil or cleansing foam. Also, use all-in-one skincare products to reduce the number of ingredients that may irritate the skin.
Skin tends to produce more oil with the seasonal temperature changes from winter to spring. Even more oil is produced in summer.
Solution: Change from richer winter skincare products and foundations to oil-free ones. Get the skin ready for summer, when oil production peaks. If you are not born with oily skin, always remember that if skin lacks of moisture it produces more oil to guard against dryness. So replenish moisture all the time.Ultra-violet rays are a major cause of signs of skin aging. Rays in spring are not as strong as in summer, but don't underestimate the harmful effect on skin.
Solution: NEVER leave the house without applying sunscreen, rain or sunshine. UV rays can penetrate clouds. Put on at least one-yuan coin size of sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply periodically.Unstable weather in spring lowers the body's metabolism rate, sending less moisture to the epidermis or outer layer of skin cells.
Solution: Stick to a daily moisturizing routine - applying toner, serum to moisturizer, and putting on a moisturizing mask every day. Drink more water and fewer beverages containing caffeine like colas and coffee; these are diuretics and cause the body to lose water.
Tips for office ladies: Sitting in air-conditioned offices all day extracts skin moisture. Keep a small bottle of water spray to quench skin's thirst.Localized spots or pimples can occur for non-oily skin types in spring, too, especially around the nose and corners of the mouth. Warm weather speeds up metabolism and oil production, which clogs pores that form pimples.
Solution: Use light-weight and gentle skincare products during a break out. Avoid spicy and other food that can irritate the skin. Avoid massaging affected skin while cleansing because this makes scarring more likely. The key to protect skin against external problems is always to make sure it's properly moisturized.
Spring skincare traps
Moisturizer all-year round
Some lazy beauty lovers will wait till summer to change moisturizer and stick to the winter moisturizer for the meantime. Although spring can still be chilly, we should always swap rich face cream for light-weight lotion or gel for this season.
No need to moisturize
If you think spring is humid so we don't need to moisturize, you would be wrong. Do not leave out moisturizers and moisture mask as part of your skincare regimen even in spring.
The frothier the merrier
Many beauty lovers prefer using more frothy facial cleanser in spring to for more thorough cleansing. While frothy face wash has an outstanding cleaning power, excessive wash is harsh on skin, especially in spring when skin is more fragile.
The harder the better
A common misconception is that if we rub our face hard with makeup remover, our skin can be really free from makeup. Actually rubbing and washing the face with too much force can hurt the skin. We should rub the face with makeup remover not more than 40 seconds by drawing circles on skin with the index and middle fingers.
A pat on the face
You may have tried patting on toner after washing your face. The patting action will only make skin more sensitive, and it will also make the skin less firm. The correct way to apply toner is gently wipe the skin with a cotton pad, which is wet with toner.
