SPANNING over 1.66 million square kilometers, Xinjiang covers one-sixth of China’s land area. The rugged Karakoram, Kunlun, and Tianshan mountain ranges occupy much of its western and southern regions.
It borders Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Xinjiang is home to a number of ethnic groups including the Kazakhs, Tajiks, Hui, Uygurs, Kyrgyz, Mongols and Russians. More than a dozen autonomous prefectures and counties for minorities in China are in Xinjiang.
With its rich culture and history, there are many historical places that deserve deep exploration, including the ancient cities of Gaochang and Jiaohe, Tuyuk Valley, Flaming Mountain, Turpan Grape Valley, and the Old City of Kashgar.
