Ancient water town makes for nice day trip
WUZHEN is a 1,300-year-old water town on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It’s also a national 5A scenic area and one of China’s top 10 historical and cultural towns.
It is at the center of the golden triangle consisting of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou along the banks of the Grand Canal.
After picking you up from the lobby of Shanghai Hotel (Add: 505 Wulumuqi Road N., Jing’an District, Shanghai), your guide will bring you to Wuzhen Water Town. The timber-framed houses of this village present a vision of old China. After tasting some local cuisine in the village streets, the guide will accompany you to attractions such as Jiangnan Hundred Beds Museum, Folk Custom Museum, Sanbai Wine Workshop and the Indigo Fabric Workshop.
Hundred Beds Museum is the first museum in China to collect and exhibit ancient beds from throughout the Yangtze Delta region. Finely crafted beds from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties showcase an eye for design and workmanship. The Folk Custom Museum provides another glimpse into the fine folk culture of this region, with a display of artifacts used in festivals and celebrations over the centuries.
The Sanbai Wine Workshop is one of eastern China’s most famous distilleries. It dates back to the Ming Dynasty and produces one of the world’s finest rice wines.
The Indigo Fabric Workshop produces and distributes indigo cloth. Indigo cloth has been part of Chinese folk culture for more than a millennium.
