Diverse India beckons with surprises

DAI Haiyan

Nationality: Chinese

Profession/Title: Sports Promoter/Tournament Director, IMG Golf, Asia Pacific

How often do you travel?

I spend as much time away as at home.

Objective of travel:

To satisfy my curiosity of this beautiful world.

Favorite traveling style: I’m certainly not a luxury traveler, but I don’t have the discipline of a backpacker either, somewhere in between, that’s me.

When I finish a journey, I always write a synopsis to record the highlights of the trip.

How many destinations have you already been?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited most of the Asian destinations, Middle East, small parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. I haven’t managed to set my feet on American soil but I guess there is still plenty of time.

What does traveling mean to you?

It helps me put things into perspective.

Do you prefer to travel alone or with family/friends?

I fancy myself a lone ranger.

Q: Why do you go to India?

A: I had always been attracted to India for its history and heritage, I first went there in 2006 for a leisure trip, then work took me back there in the following years.

Q: What’s so special about it?

A: I wish I could answer this question in a few sentences. The last time I was asked this very question, I wrote more than 1,500 words in an article named “1,001 reasons why I love India.” In a nutshell, I love everything about India, the history, the culture, the people, the architecture, literally, everything...

Q: What necessities do you have to take when going to India?

A: Tissue paper. Many places in India can be a little dusty; tissue paper will be handy.

Q: What do you do upon arriving India?

A: Usually I like to stroll around where I stay, go to cinemas or visit local markets.

Q: What places do you have to visit or see when traveling to India?

A: I highly recommend Kashmir. If that’s considered too dangerous then Darahmsala would the second on my list. It would not be a complete trip if you don’t go watch a live cricket match while in India.

Q: What local specialties do you recommend?

A: This is very subjective but I would opt for vegetarian menus since nowhere else in the world offers as many tasty vegetarian options as India.

Q: Share with us an unforgettable experience from India.

A: There are so many unforgettable experiences in incredible India. Excited crowds in cricket stadiums, pious prayers in Jama Masjid, being “attacked” by colored powders in the streets on Holi, speaking to fortune-tellers outside University of Mumbai, and hiking in the Kashmir mountains.

Q: What gifts do you bring back for friends and family?

A: It really depends on how much space you have in your suitcase, I have brought home shawls, silver jewelry, rugs, carpets, handicrafts and many other trinkets. Friends and family ask when I will go back to India so they can send me their wish lists.
