Lighting up the night

IT’S not widely known but fireflies can be seen in Shanghai. The Shanghai Tourism Administration has recommended a few places as it’s now the best time of year to spot them. The administration says Cenbu Village in Qingpu District is the best place in town and the only one in the city where two firefly species were found.

But the number of fireflies in the village has dropped sharply in recent years and experts have called on authorities to set up a protection area around Dianshan Lake.

Zhujiajiao Wildlife and Plant Wetland Park, Shanghai Zoo, Shanghai Botanical Garden and Binjiang Forest Park are other places good for spotting the insects. Experts say the best time to see fireflies is near a body of water about one hour after sunset.
