Mangrove resort reaches for the stars
DESCRIBING itself as the “first 7-star hotel in China,” The Mangrove Sanya Resort in southern China’s Hainan Province made its debut on December 24.
The resort was designed by Zeybekoglu and Associates (ZNA), a Boston-based firm of architecture, urban design, master planning and interior design.
In 2008, Antaeus Group stood out from among 21 bidding competitors because of the conceptual framework by Atkins who designed the world’s first 7-star hotel in Dubai. Covering an area of 21.5 hectares, the entire project took eight years to complete.
“Some people think it’s a butterfly, some think it’s a seashell and some think it’s a sailing boat. Nevertheless, it touches the heart of everybody who sees it,” llhan Zeybekoglu, founding principle of ZNA, said when talking about the exterior design at the opening ceremony of The Mangrove Sanya Resort.
Walking into the hotel is like approaching a world of art. Entering the lobby, guests can see the hotel’s landmark the Future Tower 230 meters away, as well as a broad seascape.
Inside the building, the corridor leading to the guestrooms has been painted like a series of lighted doors by European designer Milan Sipek, which provide guests an experience like journeying through the time.
A parking apron was built on the top of the hotel building, which is also the world’s highest boxing platform. While standing on it, the guests can see views of Wuzhizhou Islet more than 2.7 kilometers away.
In addition, 29 villas, each with swimming pools, were built around the hotel zone. These villas are elevated so that patrons will have a better view of the seascape.
With so much to offer, this inspiring architecture has already become a new destination for high-spenders.
