Pinwheel festival opens in nearby water town
ZHOUZHUANG water town today launched a pinwheel festival to lure foreign travelers and expatriates in Shanghai.
Known as “China's No. 1 water town,” Zhouzhuang is in Kunshan City of Jiangsu Province just north of Shanghai.
The festival features thousands of handmade pinwheels, a popular toy among children in Yangtze Delta Region towns.
A newly opened museum exhibits the history and development of pinwheels in water towns. All the exhibits were made with paper. Visitors can also watch Kunqu Opera, which originated in the town, and taste local delicacies like sticky rice cakes, braised pork feet with soy sauce and lotus root.
“The festival gathers many traditional elements to attract foreign travelers and expats living and working in Shanghai,” said Zhang Weiqing, deputy general manager of the Zhouzhuang Water Town Tourism Company.
Zhang said Starbucks, Haagen-Dazs and other well-known stores and cafes have opened in the town.
Many shop owners speak perfect Shanghainese and simple English, Zhang added.
Admission to the town is 100 yuan (US$16) during the day and 150 yuan for a package with a stage show that is performed at 7pm daily between April 10 and November 10. A boat tour is 80 yuan. Visitors can take the Shanghai-Nanjing Highway and exit at Kunshan.
